peer review...rd1 images only!

Intriguing composition but it doesn't sparkle: the woman gets lost. I'd bring her more into focus by cropping on the right hand side/bottom. Purists may argue that hcb never did...but then again, he never printed any of his pictures... The white balance is going wild with the street showing blue which is easy to adjust in any editing program. I'd also think this photo would show really well in black and white. cheers, p

the white balance is off on purpose, i brought up the blues to make a stronger contrast to her red hair, even though the correct white balance looked fine. i wish i had a 35mm equivalent on the r-d1 when i came upon this scene, actually i miss not having captured it as i saw, it was a very wide area, very cool tones, and then this woman with her fiery hair standing still... tried to capture what i felt when i saw it, shot with what I had in my hand :)

Sustich.

I like the cable car shot - there is some unsharpness, movement in the picture, right enough to "feel it" moving.
By the way: You should clean your sensor, some dust in the upper left qudrant.
Attachment: One of my shots, from April 2010, taken in a little village in Alsace, France (no crop)

Cheers, Andreas

Comments welcome on this one:

Taken with CV21/4. The framing is not an exact science with this one, I have no viewfinder I could use.

Do not read further before you comment. :D

Personally, I find that my eyes are drawn a bit too much to the house in the background (right hand side). The photo is not very balanced left to right in that sense, but I like the light and the three planes that all offer something to look at.

ok...i'll start!
shot at iso 200, 1/125, ae, with zm sonnar 50/1.5

Good one to start with Joe. I like it a lot. The dof, the composition, the texture. However I would like it even more if the strap hanging down the one leg had not been there. Its a clean and simple picture, loosing the strap would have accentuated this further.

Sustich, I like your whole set. Thanks for posting. I first had trouble viewing your set on my computer since the files are so large. I happened to be reading RFF on my iPad today and it automatically scaled your photos smaller (almost full screen on the iPad), which made it easier to study the composition and framing. The San Francisco image looks very nice on the iPad.

I like all your landscapes. The first two and the last one are more pleasing to look at, the one with the fence does not work for me very well as a photograph. The fence is too dominating without being the subject and just takes my eye across the frame. I like this one for a different reason: there is good details in the mountains. Have you thought about cropping this one? I would either try emphasizing the fence even more with a wider crop (16:9 or 2:1) thus removing most of the empty sky, or downplay it by using (something closer to) a square crop.

A couple words on the other landscapes in your set: There are elements in both of the first two that I like. The natural frame in the first is well seen. It is perhaps a bit too tight (too close to center) on the right-hand side. On the other hand, the tree shapes are more interesting than the other edge. Anyway, I like the second one better. It has nice colours and the U-shape in both sky and water (where it is more subtle) lead my eye to the center where the real point of interest is in this image. I like the last one, too. There is good depth and composition is quite nice. There is just enough action in the sky.

You need to clean your sensor if you already haven't done it. There are some pretty nasty dust spots in the skies. It's pretty easy to clone them out.

This was captured after a few drinks, so did the bartender. I do miss the RD-1. Thanks for viewing.

Well, if no one else is posting... Epson R-D1s with the Nokton Classic 1.4/40 & B&W UV filter

Did I kill the thread?

Not at all.

Lots of good pics, the 2 above by Peter are quite good in different ways, certainly showing versatility.
The color palette of the color shot is quite good, many of the hues being so similar.
The crop on the left side bugs me a little, I think it might look more balanced overall if it was cropped
in closer to the right, either to the womans outer left tip of her hat, to the center upper top tip of he hat,
or to the middle of her right arm. Just a suggestion. That is a difficult cropping situation to be in, and there
may be no effective alternatives.

The hats offer a strong design element that I think can also help us or hurt us as photographers.
The good news is that we can use them to optimize the design aspects. I think if the crop were
further to the right, then the triangular and white color/shape combo will become even stronger
yet not overbearing. One interesting test to do would be to do a quick color-to-B&W conversion
on your computer. My guess is there will be lots of mid-tones (zones 4-6) from the green and soft colors
and that will be seen as somewhat washed out in contrast to the white pop of the white hats, reinforced by the triangular design.
The hats would pop in the upper zones (7-9), and the girls shirt with its darker tones and horizontal/vertical shirt lines will be even
more distinct in conjunction with her strong look and body language.

Of course, there are other good shots, I just need time to take a closer look at them, and get a photo to post myself.
