Pentax 67 Gas!

This is one of my most favorite threads --- the P67 is a thing of beauty...

Here's one taken with a Pentax 67II and the last version of the 90mm f/2.8 - 320TXP in Xtol 1+1:

Wonderful shot notraces!!! Love the tones in this, I have never used txp in 320 I really wish it was still available.

Hello you people. You have caused my bank account pain. My 67 has arrived. In retribution, I'll make you view my pictures from it in some thread. :)

Congrats Snowbuzz, what is his or her nickname? Mine (as are atleast 80% of the 67 owners) is called "THE BEAST"
Looking forward to seeing your contributions to this thread.

Talked (bribed) my daughter into going on a photowalk with me.

Thank you, Doug! Thank you for the info as well!

That is a wonderful picture, j.sc. This camera is heavier than a Rollei 6008 by quite a bit. The mirror noise is very scary, with aftershocks like an earthquake! I see most of you have the skillzzz to handhold this thing at low shutter speeds so I'll see. Oh, I note that the eye-relief isn't too good for eyeglass wearers. Anyway, thank you everyone for the advice and the pictures!

That's quite the handsome copy.. that 105mm is a very good lens

How about one more of my wonderful wife -- I first titled it, "sexy wife" -- then she said she looks psycho in the photo -- so I suggested a title change, and she loved it -- so here she is -- my psycho wife :) --

pentax 67ii / 90mm f/2.8 / kodak 320txp / xtol 1+1

The web is a weird place. I "know" your wife through her blog "hello" (and other projects. Came to it years ago because I'm a designer and I'm sure it was linked by some design site. At the same time I knew your Orbit1 blog which I loved and was probably linked by a photography site.

It's all starting to feel a little voyeuristic. :)

Love your work and follow your flickr stream.

Paddy -- thanks --- you're right about my wife --- but Orbit1 is actually my best friend's blog - John Perkinson -- my site is notraces.com -- John and I go way back -- to our wild days of photographing supermodels and raising hell... :)

Big is better, however the lenses are not as sharp as Hassy or Rollie plus they are Japanese tonality and will not give the same print.

There is a difference between Japanese and German optics beyond sharpness. Argue, say what you will, the optics are what made Zeiss and Leica and Schneider. Put the prints up against each other and you can easily see.

^ Interesting, Ronald. I'll find out for myself soon but I suspect you're right based on the other Japanese / German lenses I've used.

That's interesting.
Amazing how the Japanese Pentax 67 glass was responsible for more (pre-digital) advertising and magazine pages than Hassy/Zeiss, Leica, and Rollei/Schneider. Combined.

Same with the Japanese Mamiya RZ glass.

Someone should tell Meisel, Testino, Lindbergh, Bitesnich, Annie, et al that they were handicapped all those years.

Ronald -- sorry -- I'll have to disagree with you. I've printed from all the glass you mentioned -- Pentax 67 glass is exquisite - and easily holds its own against anything I print from my Rolleiflex / Leica M's (really no contest here - Pentax hands-down) - or Hasselblad...

I could say the same thing about German glass -- not all are made the same -- not all are sharp -- not all render the same contrast or tonality. Why would they? Are you suggesting all Leica lenses are sharp - and produce the same tonality? Come on now -- that's simply not true. If you believe that, I have a nice 5cm Xenon f/1.5 I'll sell you...

I think that in general the Zeiss lenses from Rollei and Hassy are slightly sharper than most Pentax lenses (lenses like the 55 SMC are at least equal, in my opinion), but due to the 6x7 image size versus 6x6, you're getting more resolution anyway.

I think that Leica lenses are sharper in general than all of them, but they only cover a 35mm image circle (not counting the new digital 645 leica)
so it's a mute contest, they won't be able to be printed as large.

But hey, so what, they're all effin sharp! :D I promise you won't be complaining about the sharpness of any of the lenses on this camera...

I shoot with a Diana and a Great Wall, sharpness is a bourgeois concept.

Well I don't think 6x6 would be too popular with advertising and fashion because of the 'square'. Anyway, I assume the differences will be small, if any. I admit I'll be thoroughly demoralized if the Pentax 105mm wipes the floor with my Rollei 6000 system Schneider lenses. That said, the German lenses 'draw' scenes in a particular way that I like. In contrast, the excellent Mamiya 7 lenses left me cold with black and white pictures: too much macro-contrast. Whatever, we make our choices / compromises.

Thanks for clearing that up. Not sure how I got that confused. At any rate, you're both excellent photographers.

I saw this same lens up for sale before -- I'm not sure if it sold or not -- or if it's just a re-post --- just be careful. The seller is asking A LOT of money for the lens, and it's hard to tell just want sort of condition it's in... I paid about 200 dollars less for mine, and that was more than I should have paid -- but I bought it from a trustworthy dealer who gave me 30 day return privileges. The lens I bought is in top shape - and worth every penny.

Pentax 75 2.8 AL on ebay BIN $895

No affiliation with seller, thought seriously about buying it but I am holding out for a 35mm for my zeiss ikon and unfortunately I can't get both.

I was watching the last auction for this lens, it didn't sell, it had one bid of $800 which was lower than his reserve price.

Thanks for the feedback about pricing, as there is not much information out there in regards to price. I thought that they normally go for around $1000+, I like $600-$700 in pristine shape much better.

This lens does not appear to be in the best of shape, bent filter ring etc.

Thanks again. Turns out this was not the deal I thought it was.

Back in February, Dirk, at Japan Exposures, sourced one for me. The total bill (lens. taxes, sourcing fee, shipping) was $800.00 CDN. The lens itself was being sold for $640.00 CDN. It is in KEH EX+ condition.

He found another that was going for quite a bit more ($950).

So I think the listing you linked to is on the high side given the apparent state of the lens. Filter ring damage (even if you can still fit a filter) should drop the price quite a bit IMO and makes you wonder about the overall state of the lens.
