It's arrived , But I bought it from secret funding .. I can ;

Either confess to selling peter to pay pentax ... where the chances of ever buying a better DSLR from carefully controlled actually earned funds become precisely nil , though the M 8 was seen as quite enough to spend on a mere camera ... nonesens of course ... I can sip in another Zorki Kiev or two ... but a sole DSLR is does tend to stand out a bit !

Or , wait TWO MONTHS and Nikki will slip it in as Birthday present ... and I have TOW months to try for a NIkon D 300 - my all time favourite DSLR ...

Can I wait .. ?

You can wait dee, hiding gear purchases would be horrid, don't know about you but I can't lie :)

I use the 1 fight rule. If you tell her you are going to buy X; you have a fight. Then when you actually buy X you have another fight. Therefore, I just buy X and only have one fight.

Why do you really need another digital camera? Do you really need it? Is it going to make your photos better? Chances are it will not.

Learn to be happy with what you got (the m8). That's my story and i'm sticking to it.

JBF, I have three digitals, 2 DSLRs, and 1 P&S, my pictures aren't better (maybe worse). And I don't enjoy them as much (maybe worse). And it is easy to get them reproduced at Costco.

Yeah. I know what you mean, Charjohn. I think a lot of us (even myself included) often forget that it's the not the camera that matters. If we have one that works how we want it to then why keep buying cameras. I can understand if someone is a collector... but digital cameras? One is seriously enough especially if funds are not exactly readily available, etc.

Personally I dont see the reason to own both a digital rangefinder and a DSLR. Maybe if it was your profession then ok... but otherwise it really makes no sense especially if it might get you in trouble with your significant other.

Personally I own a Nikon D70s and I dont get much use out of it. I only use it when I have to (for capturing photo based textures of wood, plaster, and other surface textures) to use with visual effects work. Otherwise I'd sell it in a heartbeat and use the money for a new lens for my 35mm camera or just put it in the bank.

Digital or film makes no difference. SLRs are different from rangefinders and have different capabilities. A dSLR is a very different beast from an M8, and can do things an M8 can't do. That's why some people want both.

Dee - use it now. Life's too short to keep putting things off.

OK , I have sorted the story of the Pentax dee-lemma ...

... and have readied it and sneaked off for a few evening landscape attempts .

Now I really know how magical the M 8 is , in that OK , it is a computer masquerading as a camera - but it does such a wonderfull job of it , without silly icons , pretty colours , and all those buttons and switches .

I recall now why I stopped taking photos - a similar sense of being distanced by the electronics and plastic bulk of my Minolta7000i.

Now having said that it is '' convenient '' , and will be a boon when chasing a moving 2. 1/2 year old , or creating a table top scene from my model cars / scooters - something which I like doing .

The camera itself , I have no issue with - it's probably no '' better or worse '' to get to grips with than any other DSLR - and it is better for me than some to hold , and I can use my tiny I 50 from the Zenit for Elmar type photos , not to mention many older lenses to look out for . In no way do I regret the modest outlay [ by DSLR standards ] , of £430 , and it will be great to extend my facility .

It's the whole issue of the shape / syle of autofocus SLRS since their inception in 35mm format .
Ok , it may be the Autism , in that it's really dee-ficult to '' dee-lete '' old files erned and replace them with more appropriate , up to date stuff , and it takes forever to learn new tricks ...
[ like I have to be conscious of the process of .'' making a cup of tea / coffee '' and have to learn to re-balance if I change shoes , + a lot more ]
but I have skimmed the surface of my mac , and will be able to simplify my interaction with my Pentax .

But the '' changeable '' zoom lense , and view is a deesturbing as it has ever been - Asdee likes a constant window , as I dee-covered with such intense relief with my Fed - Leicas not so long ago .

My 1st Leica III , 15 months ago literally brough a confusing world into focus through t's constant window and familiar controls - the M 8 simply built on this enabling me to bring this new '' connection '' into the digital domain .

It's just that I needed my Pentax to show me this - my M 8 must have the most simple , uncluttered , intuitive interface twix Asdee not-quite-person and a computer at the heart of a camera .

How can I describe this ? An inheritance enabled the M 8 , it was so OTT finacially , I can in no way justify it , but it has opened up a confusing world for me - and that is priceless ...

The Pentax ? It will not make me a better considerd snapshooter , but it will complement my M 8 - but I have no dee-sire whatsoever for a '' better '' much more expensive Nikon D 300 or whatever ...

Dee - May I recommend a single lens - a 28mm in the Pentax-A series (so it is the Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8 lens). That is a nice field-of-view on the K10D, a little wider than a 50mm on one of your 35mm cameras. And the Pentax-A is a manual focus lens, which you are familiar with already.
The -A series lenses will work fine with the camera's auto-exposure modes. Try using the camera just in "P" mode to start with. You can still control your aperture with the rear thumb-wheel on the camera. Remember to set the aperture ring on the lens to "A". Good luck!

edit: The 28 on K10D is a little wider, of course, not narrower. 28 x 1.5 crop = equivalent to 42mm - nearly a perfect "normal" lens.

Thanks Chris - I realy need to simplify / rationalise / customise the Pentax to my old school way of use .

Those vision corrupting zooms can be remedied very quickly with a drop of superglue in the correct area!

If something opens up the world, confusing or otherwise, that's all the justification anyone can require, Dee. If the Pentax adds to that, so much the better.

Remember, no one is keeping score.

ChrisN feels like I do. I use the 28mm 'A' SMC f2.8 on my Pentax DL 90% of the time. It is just 'right' and I have a Zoom lens but too much fussing around. If I want to zoom I walk.

ChrisN and Charjohn - I am with you on this, but use a 24/2.8A on an istDS instead. It gives approximately a 35/2.8 view of the world. Very enjoyable and almost pocketable.

Hmmm. perfect place for analogy.

I learned long ago that a sincere commitment to one woman was far less complicated than juggling 7 girl friends....Seriously Far Less Complicated.

So, I am thinking it is possibly true with camera's in terms of getting positive and constantly improving results.

My current future ex-wife would agree with this as well, but the picture is not getting better.
