So, how about a show of hands regarding the photo portion of the trip being the Phoenix Art Museum?
We can decide on the if/when of lunch before when we've settled where we'll shoot.

I vote yes...anyone else?
 
The Art Museum sounds good to me. Are they having any major events in the near future? Also, any idea if they allow photographing exhibits?

Policies
Please help us protect the art. Works of art survive the ravages of time only through constant care. Efforts to preserve them for the enjoyment of future generations depend on your cooperation.

  • Please do not touch the objects on display.
  • Smoking is prohibited in the Museum.
  • Food and beverages are prohibited in the galleries.
  • Packages, umbrellas and bags exceeding 11" x 15" cannot be taken into the galleries; lockers are available free of charge in the lobby.
  • Still photography in existing light is permitted for personal, non-commercial use. However, tripods, flash, and movie and video cameras are prohibited. Works on loan may not be photographed. They can be identified by the object's number on the wall label; any number preceded by an "L" (for example, L1.2004) is a work on loan and may not be photographed.
 
Another possible suggestion for one of our upcoming outings, would be Goldfield. It is an old mining town out east on 60 near Apache Junction.

Very cool looking location. I've never been there.

Just for current reference, it looks like the phx art museum is exhibiting Ansel Adams through the first week in February. I thought I read that it was only open Tuesdays through Thursdays...but I don't see that on their site.
In any case, we would not be allowed to photograph in that area since it's all on loan. Be great to see though.
 
I've always been sort of put off by the prohibition against photographing works of art. It's one thing to be concerned about protecting them (sun, touching, smoking, etc.), but entirely another to say they can't be photographed. And there are plenty of museums/galleries around that say that.

Does there exist a museum that doesn't have a bookstore/gift shop some place around? Moreover, most of them are deeplyi nvolved in various forms of fund-raising. Get my point? - they want you to BUY, not do your own.
 
Anther place to meet - Tucson, during their Spring street fair. They have it twice a year, I just stopped by the current one - very colorful, much better (and better food) than anything I've seen in the Phx area, nice folks and nobody tries to whack you over the head for taking a pic :)

The next one is in Spring sometime.

Now you're talking. Not only is it much closer to me - in which case I will definitely attend - but you can't beat the spring street fair for, well, street shooting. And, as you say, the food is good. I believe you're talking about the one on 4th Street?

Ted, I had 2 breakfasts, 1 brunch, and 2 lunches, untill I could barely move, good thing I walked a lot today :) I think the fair is on 4th Ave although Avenues and Streets are perp. to each other in Tucson so maybe it was 4h St. I'd highly recommend it. Btw, Bisbee has some pretty nice cafes, I have to say.
 
Pretty sure it's 4th Avenue as the streets go east and west.

Yes, Bisbee has some charmers when it comes to retaurants: Cafe Roka (unfortunately open only Thurs, Fri, and Sat) and Santiago's (open everyday) are my favorites.

Of course, Bisbee itself is a photographer's dream.

If you go to www.bisbeemarquee.com and click on "Snaps" you can see some shots taken by mostly local folks, including a sunset shot of mine. Also, in the Gallery section are some nice shots. I probably have a few in there as well.

Definitely looks like there would be opportunities for interesting shots. I wonder how many folks could come though. Would be nice to have 2-3 hrs for walking around, then maybe a little feast on local delicacies (I know a store where they bake a HUGE and v. tasty apple pie) , before the drive back.
 
So, how's about we settle on a date in January for the museum thing?
I'll just throw Saturday the 13th out there for consideration...though I really don't have a preference.
Lunch first has been proposed. I can't think of places to eat in walking distance of the Museum, but I'm not all that familiar with the immediate area, so input there would be welcome as well.
 
Jan 13 at the Museum sounds good to me, other dates too. There are places to eat in the immediate neighborhood, no worries.

Since we've had other location suggestions, maybe it would make sense to put together a list of 4-6 s worth visting, and got from there date-wise, for the subsequent meetings? Just a an idea... or did we try that already ?
 
No, I think being organized would be a new idea actually. :)
I was thinking we need to make an email distribution list. Catching people here is hit and miss. What if a last minute change of plans was necessary?
