Here is his story in his own words to me:

Hi Akiva, Thanks for the visit the other day, nice talking with you. O.K. Here is my story: July 2009 I broke my back. The X-rays found kidney cancer which methastized into bone cancer. They put me on happy pills that made me even dumber than I was. In Nov 2009 I realized that I was not able to keep the shop door open so I closed the shop and quit cold turkey the happy pills. They then put me on chemo which gave me a bad reaction. Then they changed the chemo to Sutent which in August of 2010 gave me a bad reaction I landed in the hospital not being able to move any part of my body. From the hospital to Rehab where they taught me how to walk again. We had to sell our house, moved into an apartment where I now have my repair shop. Got a job at Delray Camera Where they let me run my shop and the buy sell trade ebay business independantly. So life is now good again. I am busy and working well. Thanks for all your support, Pete

Pete is an old school repairman all the way. Besides his beloved Nikons (He has over 150 F's alone) he works on all rangefinders and other SLR's. He can be found at:

kshapero, thanks for the good news. I have had Mr. Smith overhaul a number of my lenses, and he was always great to deal with. Good to see that he has overcome his ordeal (amazing!).

I have a couple of lenses in need of cleaning, and might send my Nikon SP too.

Good to know Pete is back in action.

I dropped my S3 on concrete steps and the RF alignment is off...

Just trying to help out an old friend. He could use the biz, as he is really just getting going again.

That is so great to hear. I have heard so many good things about him. I have a couple of Nikon S3s and an SP. SP could use a CLA and check over. Thanks, kshapero for the post about Pete. Jim

I was unaware that Pete Smith was ill but am happy to hear that he is on the road to recovery. The one and only experience I have had with him was excellent when he CLA'd an S2 for me. I would not hesitate to use him again and wish him the best.

hey guys mention my name to Pete so he will know that his email to me was worth doing. Frankly I talked him into doing it. You know, help your fellow man and all that.

I was dealing with Pete during his period of serious illness and I can vouch for Delray Camera. They were great in helping me find out what was going with my beloved S and F. Ultimately I had to have the cameras returned...............glad to see Pete is back at work.

Here in Germany I never heard from him but I'm very happy that he is in the right lane again. Last week I got a pretty black nearly unbrassed F with a Photomic FTn. Everything works fine but we never know......

I'll ask wether he has a black eyelevel finder as a spare part. The F looks so sexy with the tiny pyramide......

40 years back my street shooting stuff looked like this:

50mm and 28mm (in the leather pouch as a western gunman.... )

All the best for the future!

Great to read the story and put a face to a name...I sent him a Nikon for repair a few weeks ago,his reply was upbeat from what I've read he is one of the best people around and not just in the repair field....Regards,Bill

I don't have Nikons so I don't guess I would use him (unless he works on other things as well). But anyway glad that he has survived and recovered. That is always good to hear. Especially someone who has such a good reputation.

Glad to see him back. Doing my bit to help him out. Sent him a sick Nikon F to fix for me. (Am I even allowed to mention on this site that I have one of those?)

arh....I sent him a sp for CLA and I haven't heard from him for 3 weeks. I guess work has really been backed up. Pete did briefly mentioned about some health problem and I noticed his new address.
I'm glad he is back
