Garry Winogrand lecturing in Henry Wessel's classroom, circa 1975 or '76 (Ernest J. Zarate copyright)

My friend Ernest Zarate was in Henry Wessel's class at the San Francisco Art Institute in the mid-'70s, and took this photo of Gary Winogrand speaking to the class. Henry Wessel, the second person from the left, is loading his Leica.

Ernest recalls that Winogrand was a fascinating speaker, and also said that Wessel was a warm, excellent teacher who really encouraged his students.

Yes, he did a great discussion. You probably know this but there is a long video on YouTube of a seminar by Winogrand, I think at the U. of Texas at Austin, that is absolutely fascinating.

I live in the Bay Area and in the same county as Henry did. I was too busy with kids and work to take a luxury course, but I sure wish I had taken that one.
