I've just moved, barely settled into a new home, and already I'm going to be on the road for work. 🙄 On the plus side, I'm going back to Cologne for two weeks, and it turns out that I'm going to be there during Photokina. 🙂

So, I'm thinking that maybe I will go on Sunday, October 1st, and check out the new M8 and whatever goodies Cosina-Voigtlander will be rolling out. I've pre-registered, and will probably just buy a ticket online (only 12 Euro), so that I can get free transit for the day, too.

Anybody want to join me there?

Want is not the issue.

Have a great time. I think I will be going to the Photo Plus Expo in NYC the first weekend in November so I will get to play with the new toys then.

One thing to keep in mind about these photo shows (other than the exhibits of photos themselves) is that the companies (think advertisers) will show what they want. I've many times seen reports that certain products that are in the development stage are kept under wraps, even to the nosey reporters. Or maybe I should say ESPECIALLY to them.

As to the Leica M-8, I'm sure it will be there if they decide to do so. Maybe it will even help out Leica's sales. But rest assured that the price will be up in the stratosphere, so it will remain, as some like to say, a "niche" item.

As good as Leicas are (I have an M4-2) they are never going to win back the SLR popularity. Recently someone on these forums refered to digital SLRs as "dinosaurs". I don't think so.

It's true that vendors may not show all of their wares, to keep the hype and mystery high. However, I can't see Leica not showing the M8. I feel that it would be a mistake for them to not give the public what it wants (even if the public is a 'niche' group of photographers).

And maybe they are destined to be dinosaurs, but then digital rangefinders are trilobites at best.
