I just came in and I want to share some impressions. As we all know this Photokina is the biggie for Leica and the general impression is that they have succeeded. The interest in their new products is massive and they expect to backlog on orders. The official start of deliveries of the M8 is late November, but Leica expects to start shipping within a few weeks. So if you have a special relationship with your dealer or importer it might well be that you have the M8 in your hands a lot sooner thatn you´de expect. I have posted a few personal comments on the Leica M8 thread.
The first thing one sees when coming in is this secret weapon by Zeiss:
To more serious matters: The Leica M desk is easily the busiest on the Photokina:
And it is quite possible to test the camera's yourself:
For comments on some new Leica products, see the M8 thread.
Is film dead= Not at the Kaiser stand ,there was a whole range of enlargers.
But the Kodak hall had very few visitors and felt like a funeral parlor....
The Kodak gentleman told me he expected Kodachrome to live for one, maybe two years more and the developing plant will close some time after the last film is shipped...
Olympus had clearly enlisted Elvis on the sales team...
But this gentleman made my day. He showed me some Summarit shots he had in his pocket... I´m still drooling.....

why are your personal impressions "news"?
a post like this ruins the complete lay-out of the homepage... 2 huge pictures on the frontpage that make you scroll all the way down and to the sides...
Sorry if you feel this way, didn´t mean to upset you.The pics are 800 pixels for a 15 screen and I would rate the Photokina news.... If the moderators agree this is a faux pas, please move thread...

I'm not upset I just don't see the point of deliberately take up half the homepage with two HUGE pictures. The first thing you see when you enter RFF is an enormous picture of a medium format SLR with a 1700mm lens attached. Very relevant news item, I'm sure sponsors like leicatime will be absolutely thrilled.
If you'd at least add some text in front of the pictures so they wouldn't show up on the homepage there would be no problem...

The small orange arrows at the sides are to collapse the various parts of the forum. If you don't like it, just collapse it for now.

Better now, I hope. I´m never at a loss for words...

Thanks for posting that, Jaap. There's no way I could attend, but I do enjoy seeing and hearing what goes on, particularly first person, not filtered by the media.

I loved it too. Please send more pics if you can. BTW, what is that viewfinder looking thing on what I presume to be the M8?

It's the 16-28 finder for the new tele-elmarit I think. Thanks for taking pics of Photokina and posting them jaapv.

No- it is the multi-finder for the new Tri-Elmar.(Which I am convinced you meant - I always confuse all those Leica names as well... )

I, for one, enjoyed your report. I've always wanted to attend, but never have had the chance.
Some more human interest photos and personal impressions would be welcome!
