Can anyone ppint me to a source where I can download the Epson PhotoRAW utility for WinXP? I've tried thru the Epson Europe website but it seems their stp site is down (at least I can't reach it from NYC).

I wanna take a peek at my RAWs but I can't without the PhotoRAW utility, and I don't have any PS or PSP available this weekend.

Just sent you an email and a PM. I've downloaded it from Europe and will send to you if you give me an email address - about 7.5 Mb.

Thats for Mac only seeingly.. I'm only going with the app that came on the CD with the R-D1, is there a more recent (1.10?) version for windows?

From Epson there's only version 1.01 available.

I was in the end able to download the file, thankyouverymuch. I wish there was a small utility that I could fire up so I can see the images without having to start up the full PhotoRAW program. Something like a PhotoRAW viewer. Does that exist?

A lot of programs will let you see the embedded JPEG preview image (sorry, don't know which Windows ones do this, as I'm a Mac user, but I'm sure there are some out there.) However, that's not the same as seeing the actual raw image. You can't really expect to see the raw file with a small utility, because there's nothing visible until the data is decoded -- that's what PhotoRaw and various other converters do.

One handy option that makes it easy to edit a lot of raw images at once is Adobe Bridge -- it renders small previews from the raw file "on the fly" and shows you a screenful of them at once. Once you've examined them, you can crop and adjust just the good ones using the underlying power of the Adobe Camera Raw application. Unfortunately, you can only get Bridge by buying one of the Adobe Creative Suite applications such as Photoshop.

Another option from Adobe is Lightroom, currently available as a free beta. It also lets you view a whole "contact sheet" of raw images at once, then crop and adjust etc. It's got some additional features Bridge doesn't have, such as the ability to print photos (in a variety of layouts) and export web pages. This doesn't help you at the moment, since there's no Windows version available yet, but Adobe is working on one.

One thing that I know IS available in Windows is Microsoft's Raw Image Thumbnailer and Viewer (see this link) but I don't know if it supports R-D 1 raw files. Might be worth a look, though.

JLW, that's useful information! I'll look into it.

The reason why I want a viewer utility with a small footprint is that I might not always be able to use my own laptop/pc. Access to a laptop/pc or internet, downloading a large program and installing it, is often a problem when on the road (in Mongolia, for instance). It would be nice to have a small utility in my Gmail box that I can run (or quickly install) when I need it. I wouldn't necessary need to do much or any post-processing work but it would be nice just being able to see the shots on a screen instead of on the post-view screen of the RD1 after a day's shooting.
