I noticed deepwhite posted some shoots in another thread. So I thought, why not collect some shoots here. Maybe we are too few but I post here some pics anyway.

the curious cat, I sweated a bit when I did approach a bit and the cat seems to be ready to leave. Boring shot of a cat, I know but I wanted show how the lens renders the surrounding. Warning 1500px wide (look at 100%)

For me, SA is more than good plus I got nice compact size which is much more important together with good handling than higher resolution, sharpness, vignetting free. cheapest price etc. No need for biogon or CV for me but Im looking for 21mm Zeiss vf and CV 28/35😉

Back from work. Time to post photos. The problem is that I didn't have time to take new shots, so I can only post old ones for now.

IMHO, the amazing thing about the Super-Angulon 21/3.4 is that it's really two lenses in one body, since they behave very differently in color shots and B/W.

[Test Shot]

This one was taken while I met with the original owner. It was a cloudy afternoon. The first impression I got from this lens was a "weird sense of blue and green". Also the vignetting on the left and right sides are quite interesting, because no other lens has vignetting like this from what I've seen. The other thing I've noticed is a special feeling when it's about to over-expose. I'm not a native English speaker and am really out of words....

[High-end Lomo]

One thing people love about lomo is vignetting. To me, the SA21/3.4's vignetting on the left & right sides is more special, while it retains very good resolution and sharpness. For color shots, it's really a "high-end lomo" if we want to call it this way.

By the evening, I found that the SA21/3.4 tended to render the world more blue-and-greenish. In this picture it did so to the background, and thus made the red & yellow lamps more distinguish.

Bad weather. The SA21/3.4 gives this picture an "over-shadowing" atmosphere.

The lens looks great, I like it's character a lot. How much post-processing is in those? The colors are really saturated (in a good way to me) and very contrasty. My interest is piqued in this lens.

Hi morgan,

The photos I post here, including the B/W ones in the link, are all JPG direct from R-D1s without post-processing. Sometimes I would boost 1 step of saturation in the R-D1s setting menu but that's it.

That's why I love this lens. It's a bit unreal (not good for every shot but great for some) without the need of post-processing. When making records I love to record everything the way I want them to be into the microphone, instead of "fixing them up" later, and I feel the same when taking pictures.

By the way, the contrasty look comes from the vignetting I think, because when I compare photos of the same scene with the SA21/3.4 and Summicron 35/2 IV, the latter is actually more contrasty, while they look in the opposite way when viewed on their own.

Arrrgggghhh! So annoying! I bought a (quite expensive) Elmarit 21 2,8 a while ago and I never use it because it renders a scene more clinically than I like: whatever you see it just 'records' that. Now I realize what a dumb mistake I made - I love the dreamy mysterious look of this lens.

So... who wants to swop? 😱

One evening I was walking along the street and saw the beautiful sky. Suddenly I had a "vision", a "wicked version" of this beautiful sky I was looking at, if taken with the SA21/3.4 in R-D1s' B/W mode plus the yellow filter setting.

So I took the shots.

And the results were exactly as I imagined. Talking about "pre-visualization".... ;-) (joking)

To show you what the sky looks like in the real world, here is the "actually not wicked sky" taken about half a minute later, also with the SA21/3.4 and R-D1s.

I too would like to sell my Zeiss 21 f/2.8 and buy a Super Angulon. I would like to know the differences between the f/3.4 and f/4 versions.

I really don't know what's the difference between SA21/3.4 & SA21/4 leica-m. I went for the 3.4 only because I was inspired by the works of those that use SA21/3.4, like Tommy Oshima on flickr.

i'm in the same boat as you -- except that i got my lens as part of a package deal with the R-D1. after trying the SA, i would swap it in a minute!!!

i did a lot of research on this after finding a collector SA here (too dear with the exchange rate :bang: ). the f/4 is considered quite inferior to the f/3.4. with all the "features" of the 21mm SA (no metering, etc.), the f/4 is not worth bothering with... go straight to the SA 21/3.4 and get ready for a ride! you'll love it!

This lens is officially on the wish list. I just need to save up and find one. I love the character of it. Dare I say, kind of Holga-ish. What's the going rate these days? It's probably going up from this thread...

I have seen a couple of them in the last month in a range from 1200 - 1500 US$ (depending on condition and extras). I had to buy the hood extra (quite expensive on eBay) and was lucky to get the original front lens cap here at RFF for a very reasonable price.

My first experience with the SA21/3.4 was at Europhoto on Blvd. Beaumarchais. That and the Summaron 35/2.8.

What can I say? Euro is too strong now.... That was how I retained my will power, which I lost again when back to Taiwan. :bang:

That's what I thought when I saw you mentioned "Beaumarchais".

I barely escaped from that street that afternoon. One camera I loved a lot was my Rollei 35S, and that day I saw almost all versions of the Rollei 35 in one store, including the special version that only 1200 were made...... 😱

The SA21/3.4 in the store is chrome, very beautiful. The one I got now is black. Luckily I got it with almost everything, including the hard to find filter.

By the way, I'm quite good at shooting with the SA21/3.4 on R-D1s without external VF now. I keep both eyes open and imagine a frameline that's about 9/5 of the size of the 35mm frameline.
