Steve,

See you there. I'll be working as a volunteer from 6-11 PM, and I should be there around five.

Last Friday I was a greeter at the main gate handing out programs by the Leica booth. I actually saw and heard Donato's presentation in the Leica booth on getting close and personal doing street shooting.

Chris,

I'll be volunteering again tonight. I hope to get assigned as a greeter again at the main gate near the Leica booth. Tonight at 7:00 PM is a presentation in the Leica booth about night shooting which kinda is important to me.

Last Friday I heard Donato's talk about street shooting.

I went there yesterday.
Followed the Leica low-light walk/shoot around the Brooklyn Bridge.
Not my kind of crowd.
I guess I'm too old and not easily impressed with style over substance.

I think Photoville is a powerful event, although like you I don't really see how my work really fits in. I see in the displays a part of the world that we all know about, but the curation of this event really shows the plight of the world that perhaps we do not know.

I am vaguely aware of some of the issues that deal with immigration, refugees, poverty, enviornmental destruction, global warming, armed conflicts, civil rights abuses, racism...

65 million people in the world are displaced as refugees which is a number I can't get my head around. For me really Photoville makes really graphic lives of perhaps half the world that I only have a glimps of.

Basically I live in a bit of a bubble. Much of what is presented in Photoville is either glossed over or under-reported. In the bigger picture this is the real world we live in: the haves; and the have nots. It is a stark view of the world, but it is the real world.

Very well said, Cal. I agree with your statement.
But, I attended Photoville in hopes of raising my skill level/vision so I can produce better photographs.
I'm not that interested in trying to solve mankind's problems with my camera.
For me, photography is my refuge from the world's political, social and economic issues.

I'm with you. Without my photography the world makes no sense at all.
