Picking a Canonet

I have another question (I can hijack my own thread, can't I?). How can I tell when my Canonet was made? In the film chamber, I see a code reading "S835" and the Serial # on the back is F733**. Do the Canonets use the same date code system like my "L" lenses did before I sold them off? Does this mean this is a 1978 Canonet?

Thanks,
Bob

I swapped the foam, gave it a once-over with a cotton swab and alcohol, and today I'm going to find a battery for it and go run some Tri-X through it.

Anyone know where I can get a 48-49mm step-up ring, a Red 25 and polarizing filter, and a vented lens hood?

Bob

Yep - you're getting hooked and will be going to skin it next Bobbo. See what's available at Camera leather.com (See my gallery for my revitalised model)

Most of your neeeded stuff can be picked up on ebay, but how are you intending using the polarizer - have a think, remembering your not viewing through the lens .......

(Note both the correct Canonet hoods - 4 & 5 have clamp on screws, unlike the earlier types)

Happy snapping.

Skinning a Canonet is a good thing. I have one in a dark red lizard skin that is so pretty I almost don't want to use it.

And airds is correct, as I mentioned above, that both the Hood 4 and Hood 5 clamp on to the outside of the lens barrel rather than screwing onto the lens threads. You can see the small thumb screws on these respective hoods in the pics I posted above.

filmgoerjuan: Thanks. I had that link back when I shot Canon SLRs...didn't know about date codes in bodies. I just looked in the one remaining Canon SLR I have (a mutilated and death-by-old-strobe-electrocution Rebel 2000) and it was even in that one (April, 2002🙂).

airds, vrgard: great, another thing for me to do to this poor camera🙂. What's a good color? Always a fan of brown or black, but what else do you guys think would look nice enough to take to work (read NO DAY-GLO YELLOW/BLUE/GREEN🙂)

As for a hood, the prices on those things are obscene for what I paid for the camera ($27 shipped). Wouldn't buying a 48-49mm step-up ring and a metal 49mm shade work? I could always make a cutout for the viewfinder if it bothers me too much, right? (I need a bumper sticker that reads "I brake for Dremel"🙂).

Good call on the polarizer...I guess I can live with a Red 25 since all I plan on shooting is B&W then (cue filter manufacturers mourning the loss of another filter sale). I think I'll look for a nice 48 or 49mm multicoated filter, like a B+W maybe.

What's a good neckstrap? All of the ones I have are big Op/Tech straps that are overkill for my D1H, 70-200 VR and strobe, let alone this poor Canonet. I might even want a wriststrap, but I'm not sure yet. Sure, the camera will fit in the pocket of my sportcoat at opening night for a new theatre production, but I dunno yet. Suggestions? Gordy's look nice, but not sure of there's anything else. Hmm...

That's all for right now, other than:

Is there a brown ever-ready case anywhere? I like brown better than black for that...

Why do I get the feeling that a strange computerized voice is calling out from the Delta Quadrant saying, "WE ARE CANONET! RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!"...

Okay, now I'm done for now.

Have a nice night,
Bob

Don't be a cheapskate and buy the proper hood!!!!!

Bobbo, only you can decide what color you prefer. Check out www.cameraleather.com for lots of pics of different leather colors on different cameras. I went with the dark burgundy lizard on a chrome/silver Canonet and thought it turned out really well. (credit to Greyhoundman for doing the work - he did all the "skinnin" and put the leather on for me when I had him do a CLA on the camera)

As for a hood, heck, if you got a good Canonet QL17 GIII for $27 shipped then you got a steal. So don't worry too much about spending a few more dollars on it. But basically you're right that you can cobble together a step up ring and a generic hood and save a few dollars. In fact, that's sorta what I did at first - no step up ring but did put a generic 48mm screw in hood on it. Guess I'm just a completist so later decided I wanted the proper hood for it.

As for straps, etc., I put a Gordy black wrist strap on mine and it works really well particularly given the small size and weight of the Canonet. Oh, and the wrist strap is tied off with the dark red lace to sorta match the burgundy lizard. Gee, ain't I just the fashionable guy...

Hope that helps answer some of your questions.

I suggest doing a search in the gallery for the Canon QL17 GIII. There are many impressive shots. I like the warmth that this lens gives to colour film.

Hi Bobbo,

I happen to have both a Canonet Hood 4 and a Canonet Hood 5. I've read that the 4 is the proper hood for the Canonet QL17 GIII however the 5 works fine too. They both have a little cutout to see through when you look through the viewfinder so they don't block your view when framing a shot. Pictures shown below of each (Hood 4 on the left and Hood 5 on the right, as is evident from the printing on the boxes)

The only difference between the 4 and 5 that I have noticed is that the 4 is a round hood and the 5 has flats on opposing sides of the round hood. They both clamp on to the outside of the lens body with a thumb screw. And a neat feature is that you can reverse them so rather than sticking out they cover the lens body. Neat, not to protect the lens, but makes for a smaller package for traveling or putting in your pocket or bag.

Be forewarned, however, that the Canonet hoods are kinda pricey. Presumably because they're somewhat rare. I've seen them regularly sell for something like $45. Of course, you can always look for a generic 48mm hood which will likely be cheaper. But since I'm not really shooting with my Canonet these days I would be happy to sell you one of mine.

Best,
Randy

Hello Randy did you sell your canon canonet hoods,if not I am intrested, thank you jorgef2002:bang:

I agree with Scott. I´m a happy owner of older Canonet QL 17, Canonet QL 19 New and Canonet QL17 GIII.

Older QL17 it´s 1,7/45mm lens and 55mm filters -easy to get one-. Shutter speeds B, 1 to 1/500 sec. It´s bigger and heavy than the others. x 0,7 Viewfinder magnification. Flash need a cord to connect German socket -not hot shoe!-

QL19 New it´s 1,9/45mm lens and 48mm filters. Shutter speeds B, 1/4 to 1/500 sec, x 0,6 viewfinder magnification.

QL17 GIII it´s 1,7/40mm lens. The rest is like QL19 New.

Photometers well calibrated are too accurate at my Canonets. I compare with a hand held meter and I haven´t differences in average measurements.

I love them but... QL19 New take excellent images in color and B&W, also using autoexposure. It´s my experience.

Agustín 🙂

Hi Bob,
Blue is quite nice 😉
http://pentax-manuals.com/camgallery/gallery10.htm

If you want a easonably priced early QL drop me a line and I may be able to help. You might even persuade me to part with the blue one. None of them will need a CLA. 😉

Thank you all for the offers, but I got my Canonet in the middle of August🙂. It hasn't seen much use from me so far, so I see no need to get another one. Thanks anyway.

Have a nice day,

Bump! I do hope that you are enjoying your Canonet QL17 GIII. I myself have both the Canonet QL17 GIII, and the older QL17 along with the older QL19, (2)QL25's, and (2) New 28's. I haven't had a real chance to compare the two 17's against each other photowise as I just received the older QL17 Saturday, but I've also be laid up for about the last month with a bummed up knee so I haven't really gotten a chance to take any photos anyway.🙁

Well I hope this isn't considered a "hi-jacking" of this thread.
Enjoy your shooting, and may you always have the correct lighting conditions you require.
