i know people make fun of images posted on facebook...but i get more feedback on images from there than here at rff.

hell, i get more feedback on images at other camera/photo sites than here at rff!!

i love gear and i love bags but i love photography more and while i understand the ideal of doing this for myself and being satisfied with my own work...i'd be lying if i said that it's not nice to get feedback from the outside world as well!!

The trouble with FB is that if you finally come up with the perfect image of a basket of kittens or someone holding some adorable puppies the crowd goes wild.

It disturbs me! :p

Well this is a gear enthusiast forum. Facebook is supposed to be a friend "forum".
Where would you expect more friendly responses to images?
I doubt half of members here even look at image threads or the gallery ever.
Judging by the number of 0 post members using the classified (even old members from way back), most are not posting anything at all until it's time to sell things.

I frequently comment on photos in threads, but I admit I rarely do in the gallery. I'm not sure why. I think most images in the gallery are very good, and frequently even superb.

But I guess the larger question is do you want people complimenting your work? Or critiquing your work?

Sure I get compliments/comments on my images if/when I post them on facebook, but they are from friends and family, none of whom would bother to say something negative and/or constructive. When's the last time you've seen someone post an image on FB and get critiques like, "Blown highlights, crooked horizon, looks a little underexposed," etc?

Take it with a grain of salt. I take pictures for me, for my pleasure. Not 100% for others. But I still post them around and if someone sees something in my images that they like then great! If not then it doesn't bother me either.

If 50 people can pass by without saying anything it doesn't necessarily mean that those 50 people all dont like the work. I frequently see lots of great stuff but dont feel like posting.

Dont stress about it, photography should be fun! Not a popularity contest (that's kind of how it feels online to me sometimes, I can see that viewpoint for sure)

Sometimes I will leave a comment on someones Flickr page, and then not repeat that here, or vice-versa. Just depends on where I see it first. Then some days I just can't get the words to form.

I just don't like Facebook and only have an account so I can see the rare item I am referred to. OTOH, I have very recently gotten myself involved with Instagram and there is a ton of feedback there...a ton.

That said, I'd rather have one "like this photo" or nice comment here than 100 on IG. I think the level of work here is second to none. The only other forum I know of that really compares is the Nikon DSLR forum (but I'm sure there are many I'm not aware of). Photo.net has a lot of nice stuff because so many folks use it to store pix for their clients, but there is no real "community" there in my opinion.

I plowed my way through your very large gallery here the other night and "liked" a number of your pix, but I admit that I'm not the big "commenter" ... I think I should work on that a bit; there were dozens of your pix that were really striking and that gave me inspiration...keep it up.

Agree completely...maybe that is why we are visual rather than authors :)

i did see that tom and it was greatly appreciated!
i think facebook isn't the greatest place to post pics really...but i am trying to show more of my work to more of my friends...

I messed around with instagram briefly but got bored with it very quickly ... the whole smart phone thing just hasn't impressed me at all and my very expensive HTC has now become just a phone effectively. I was using it to regularly engage with FB and uploaded the occasional pic ... not now!

Aside from the FB issue I also have a problem with the variety of methods we are using to link our lives to social media sites. A desktop PC, laptop, tablet and smart phone are in a lot of people's lives currently and of course they all effectively do the same thing ... it's too much!

I agree, (maybe it's an age-thing) but I too have been simplifying my "online life" recently by cutting out activity to some sites (e.g., flickr), as well as pretty much only using my laptop, and not my mobile phone).

To each his own.
