A picture of a potato sold for €1 million.

The photographer Kevin Abosch said:

"I see commonalities between humans and potatoes that speak to our relationship as individuals within a collective species," says Abosch. "Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted. I use the potato as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience." :bang:

I love this. It's actually better than 90% of photography from the web and has more meaningful statement, even if it's total bull. So funny. This world is a miracle :D
 
I have a theory:

Could it be that most buyers of "record selling" photographs are just friends of the photographers (this one was sold after a few glasses of wine in the photographer's home) and they just want to help their buddies gain a higher profile and jack up the prices of there artwork? Maybe they are even investors in the photographer's business?
 
How much did he get for the first 344 potato portraits? If they are anywhere as good as this one, he should be able to give up photography before he hits 350 potatoes.
 
People pay for things they find of value, there's lots of other things people pay a lot of money for that I wouldn't use if I were paid to.

Do I personally think this is worth the price ? Does it matter to whomever has this much money to spend ?
 
This confirms quite well the theory, that people WANT to pay a lot for "modern art", particularly if the said "art" is completely uninspiring. Then, they can hang it on the wall above their fireplace and pretend they see and understand things about this "masterpiece" that the stupid wage earning commoners cannot comprehend, thus in their imagination, lifting themselves to a category of connaisseurs "in the know".
 
I think it matters if the price is contrived for publicity or business reasons

It brings to mind (tangentially) Edward Weston's pepper images

when I see those - I see originality, I see a human form in abstraction

when I see this potato - I see a well lit potato

I never understood his pepper shots until now (not that I really investigated them heavily), but my mind is blown. Thank you for the insight, I feel very silly now...
 
I will from now on resist eating baked potatoes anymore. They will seem to me like one million Dollar bills ...
 
So what subject is worthy of any price?

I'd say a potato is totally fine, as long as there's someone willing to pay for it.

I like composition and tones are superb. I clearly see rendering specific to FF sensor and modern well corrected lens.
 
I was going to chime in with something witty, but I'd never top some of the funny comments here.
