picture quality (linked pictures)

Hello,

whenever I try to link to pictures from my flickr account in postings here, I am somehow dissatisfied with the quality of the linked pictures as they appear in the forum messages. The original pics on flickr are sharp and crisp, but when I view the linked picture in the message preview, the pic appears to be rather dull and soft. My impression is that the pics are displayed somewhat larger and maybe also downsampled in quality compared to the original size and quality of the linked picture, which makes them appear rather dull and unsharp. However, when I right click the pic and chose "view picture", the pic will appear in a new tab in correct size and sharpness. Is this behavior normal or am I missing something?

Try to use the BBCode to link the Flickr images. It's under the "Share this" / "Grab the HTML/BBCode" command. You just need to select the code and cut&paste in the topic box message. It allows for several formats and automatically insert the Flickr title.

The reduced is not a result from linking but results from linking NOT to the original photo. When you upload a photo to flickr then flickr renders some smaller versions of your photo but leaves the original version untouched. Because they are rendered automatically there might be degradation in quality although I never experienced this. You can check the quality of the smaller files when you move to a view called something like "show all sizes".

When you do it like Stravinsky described before you can generate a link to every size available. Just past this link here.

thanks for the replies and sorry for bringing this topic up again. I still have not figured out how to embed the image in a way that it is shown in its original size and quality. The forum software (or my browser?) somehow rescales and displays the images larger than their original size, which makes them appear soft and blurred.

At 100% view in Photoshop the image measures about 22 cm. However, when it is embedded in a Forum message and displayed it measures about 27 cm. So the image is displayed about 20% larger than its natural size, which explains why it is blurred. However, when I right click the picture and use the "view image info" menu (Firefox), the picture is shown in it's natural size, sharp and clear.
I am not sure if the problem lies within my browser or the forum software.
Any help is highly appreciated.

Forget cm in a web presentation. And by the way. The photo you linked to looks absolutely the same in RFF and in flick when I look at the original. And it looks a little blurred in flickr too.

Does it look this way in photoshop too? Go to PS, resize the image to 800px an then look at in PS at 100%.

When I was talking about photoshop I was of course talking about the original image size which is 800 px wide (the height is about the same but irrelevant for the discussion). The image is reasonably sharp. At 100% display this gives an image size of 22,5cm (wide) on my screen (horizontal resolution 1650 px, screen is ~46,5 cm wide). When I upload this pic to flickr and view it in it's highest resolution in flickr it is still 800px (22,5 cm on my screen) wide.
Now, when I embed this picture via BBS code into a message in RFF as done in the linked thread, the image is displayed 27cm (or 960 pixels, if you prefer so) wide on my screen and looks soft (or washed out?), because it's not displayed at 100% but at ~117%.
Now, when I rightclick the image and have it displayed in the "view image info" frame in Firefox it states dimensions (800 x 777 px), the image in this frame is indeed 800 px (22,5 cm on my screen) wide. When arranging both (the forum pic and the one in the Firefox image info frame) side by side on the screen it is obvious that the RFF displays the picture indeed larger than it's native size (and therefore with inferior quality).

I have linked a screen shot of that situation to illustrate the different dimensions of the pics when displayed on the screen. I don't have a pro account with flickr, so the whole screen shot is resized to fit below their 1024px limit, but that doesn't change the ratio of the dimensions of course.

Now, this second screen shot shows the image displayed in RFF against the image displayed in original 800 px size in flickr side by side and I think it is evident that the image size is not "absolutely the same"

So the questions remains, why are the images rescaled (enlarged) when displayed in RFF and is there a way to avoid this?

Are you sure you watch both (rff and flick) sites with your browser magnification of 100% ?

Believe me. When I look at the toskana01 photo in rff and flickr the size on the screen is absolutely the same for me. (17.8cm on my tiny macbook pro)

Thanks for the feedback. All the pics in RFF look so much better now... 😀
I did think it could have to do with my browser settings at some point in the past, but what fooled me was the fact that the image appeared in it's native size on flickr and also in the image properties dialogue, which led me to think, that if it had to do with my browser settings than the image would appear too large on any website.

In Firefox, press Ctrl + 0 (that's zero).

To expand a little bit, Ctrl-[minus] and Ctrl-[plus] in firefox magnifies the whole page including the images. On my laptop the images appear with jagged edge.

Ctrl-0 resets the magnification the default, which works the best of most displays.

Haha, no worries. Had me stumped too so it was nice to find the answer. Like shadowfox said, it was just a case of (probably accidentally) making the text bigger at one time or another.
