Pictures piddling around

Keep posting photos, Daniel. I'm glad to see you here. It might take a while to get people into the habit of commenting on pictures. We just wrapped up the World Cup telecast here on the west coast of the US.

Years ago, a colleague used to occasionally lend me a Contax IIa and a Sonnar 50. What has always impressed me about the postwar Zeiss lenses and their FSU cousins is the nicely controlled contrast and long tonal scale that is possible, along with the high resolving power.
A little something has been lost with the development of higher-contrast films (Neopan 400 comes to mind) and contrasty multi-coated lenses. Daniel's saxophone photo is a good reminder that there are other approaches.
The sax picture looks like the exposure was pushing the limits of the light and film, and it's impressive how well it holds together.

A really nice image Dan !
I have a 4AM & H 103 also. This photo gives me great inspiration to take some of my own shots in one of the clubs here in Austin. The f1.8 is great for available light work.
Thank you for posting !!

Charles

Thanks for continuing to post such interesting work. I always enjoy seeing your images, but don't often leave comments which repeat the comments of others (all admiring your photos). Not only do you demonstrate the suitability of the Kiev for your subjects but also your excellent eye for composition/detail and high quality of exposure and processing. Carry on posting!......

Hi Daniel, do you always use XTOL diluted?

I'm asking because I'm wondering about the life time of the stock solution. Do you have the stock standing in half-filled containers?

In May I mixed my first XTOL, 5 liters, and now with 28 films developed am just 1/3 through it's optimum life time (as I figured it from the Kodak tech papers). I am storing it in a 5 liter canister and using undiluted, 600ml a time (two rolls). After development I pour the used soup back into the canister and add a few ml of water to reduce air space in the can. I know this practice sounds stupid to some people, but I figured it's the closest that I can get to an unreplenished deep tank process so I decided to try it. Also, the practice is very straightforward and clean-working.

I'm mainly shooting Classic/Forte films and am looking forward to tasting Foma 400 (saw your posts on the Fotoimpex board as well). I've also done some ADOX CHM400 and the negs came out rather thin.
