I remember a beer and cigar thread but did I miss one for pipe smokers? Please forgive me if I did miss that. I just wondered how many of my fellow photogs enjoy a good bowl while shooting? My favorite right now is a Stanwell Majestic #246 :D

Love to puff a pipe while resting on my patio. I get my tobacco at Old Morris in Victoria. I recently bought a Meerschaum pipe from Turkey off of eB"y in the churchwarden style that I have been enjoying a few times this week.

Old Morris sounds like a great place. I may just order some Black Forest from them. Thanks for the link!

7 years ago I met my wife. I stopped smoking. Always missed it. Had my first pipe today: Germain's Special Latakia Flake. I think I am going to stay with the smoke ...

Frog Morton on the Town, by McClelland. Basma and Latakia. I'm smoking a bowlfull right now.

I'm a sucker for Balkan-style baccy although I light up once in a blue moon these days. A bowl of Squadron Leader and a good book: bliss.

I don't really know how one shoots a camera while smoking. For me smoking a pipe is definitely a sitting down activity and everything else can wait for 20. Although I was watching a video on youtube recently with some footage from the 1950s and I noticed a couple of people with pipes and cameras photographing trains.

I was a pipe lover for years. Now I am in natural tobacco hand rolled cigarettes . I miss the smell of a good pipe tobacco.

i smoked Peterson pipes for years, using custom blends from a local tobacconist - John Dengler Tobaccos - but gave it up in '98. Still miss it, would love to start again (still have all my pipes) but won't. During 20 or so years of pipe smoking I don't think I owned a shirt or jacket that wasn't pocked by escaping ashes! Ruined a perfectly good Domke photo vest that way!

Yep, I was into pipes as well.
Always enjoyed it a lot, but because of time consuming, almost never smoke them anymore.
As it happens, I just made my decision a week ago: in 2013, i will smoke pipes again.
My favorites are Winslow / Crown pipes, with Sweet Vanilla Honeydew or Shannon (both from Dan Tobacco):

That's kind of the point though! I don't smoke cigarettes because they're too convenient, it's too easy to just keep smoking any time you have a few minutes to kill (and it gets addicting to too). If I'm going to smoke I want to be deliberate and I want to relax. This usually means I only smoke during the evening on weekends, but that sure beats chain smoking cigarettes.

I used to smoke a lot during unemployment, but now I rarely find the time to sit down and relax.. And it's -10 C outside, so you don't want to sit around for to long anyways.
I got a few tins of some very good smoke last time I visited Copenhagen, called "My Own Blend", they had a huge variety of blends.

Exactly, but I followed the cigarette path. To smoke less cigarettes and to relax, I started pipe smoking years ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep making time for smoking a pipe in a relaxed way.

When I was on holiday in New York 2 months ago, I couldn't help it: I had to go to a smoke shop and bought 2 nice pipes.:)

Dunhills Light Flake, London Mixture, and Royal Yack... Went through therapy when they were removed from the US market.

I have a bunch of pipes. Haven't smoked 'em in many years. I used to enjoy some of the Dunhill flakes. There was one tin that had a picture of a guy in a sleeping cap. Strong stuff. Not for the timid. It was called something like Sleepy Time (sleeping & smoking? not such a great combo).

Nightcap.

I have a tin or two cellared.

I was a given a pipe a couple of months ago when I turned 40. I guess it was meant as a signifier of my, ahem, maturity. I have no idea how to smoke it, and have only smoked a handful of cigarettes in my lifetime. Perhaps I should try it, and freak the wife out.

Break it in gently, half a bowel at a time. Don't char the bowl
too hard until a few days later.. Then you get to scrape the bowl and
enjoy your pipe. Get a few more pipes and rotate them so that the last one can cool. Best advice: Don't start smoking!

Best regards,

/Clay
