Hi there friends,
I recently aquired a lovely Planar 50/2 (M mount), It's a wonderful lens, very sharp, amazing 3D feeling, I think it's the best lens I ever had (but didn't have too many though 🙂 ).

I did a test drive on it and notice some minor vignetting when it's wide open. Nothing serious though. I can post the picture later (can't do it from work).
The sample shot was done with no hood and no filter.

Has any of you noticed it? does any one has sample shot when the lens is wide open and the backroud is clear and with no details so vignetting can be seen?

Many thanks
Assaf

Most lenses have something approaching 2 stops of falloff at the very corners at full aperture. Near the end of the frame it's about one stop of falloff (at full aperture).

When you stop down a couple of stops it's much less. Have a look at the pdf file for this lens on www.zeiss.com and you'll see the graph. As serious as it seems, it's normal.

Assaf, please do post your photo when you can, as I was about to take the plunge and buy this lens.

Also, do you have any comment to make about its reputed resistance to flare?

John, I saw the graphs but I don't know how to read them....

I'll post the shots later today.
Jonathan, the vignetting is observable but very very marginal. I'm asking about it because I read in the internet (and in RFF) about lenses which have a reputation of "no vignetting at all".
I don't want to give a bad reputation to this amazing lens, and I try not to give myself a reputation of a pixel peeper 🙂

Got the lens for about ten days and shot only ~5 rolls, haven't seen flare but I'm not the one to ask. Besides, all modern lenses (including CV) are quite resistnat to flare.

However, I highly recommend it. There's also one for sale in the classifields.

Well, I looked at the pictures again. It's hardly noticable and when it is, the filter was on the lens. I might just be paranoid.... I think I'll double check (and go shoot some interesting images and not just tests....)
If anybody had wide open shots from this lens I'd be happy to see them.
Meanwhile I apologize for this dull thread and I'll leave you alone 🙂

I have been shooting with this lens in a lot of rough conditions, flare has not been something I have noticed. I have two shots that have flare from several hundred frames, one is where the sun was just above the image and I was using a hood and the other was of my friend on the train where the window in the back caused some flare. I noticed some minor veiling glare in some shots but its nothing that a moments tweaking cant take care of. Also shooting at bright lights such as the sun or light bulbs in a bar didn't produce any flare or whatnot.

Also I have not noticed any meaningful light falloff but the places I shoot sometimes its not easy to see such things.

See attached photo for example of flare, top left in his hair.
