I was photog at a evening family affair with my newly acquired R-D1s and, besides the obvious remark "Your flash didn't fire" one of my brothers in law noticed my new toy.
Do you have a Leica?
etc etc.

After I briefly explained the functionality of the R-D1s he looked at me rather pityingly and proclaimed that I must have bought the "Platypus of Camera's"

(He should know, he still uses Revox recorders with big tape reels)

I didn't know what to answer immediately and decided to fight back with the results.
But, thinking of this later on his remark was not fully untrue.
What is your opinion on this?

An egg laying mammal with webbed feet and a bill ... hmmm!

I've seen a platypus but I've never seen an R-D1 ... the platypus will be around when the R-D1 is long extinct ... the R-D1 may well eventually lay an egg though! 😀

He may either have meant it in the sense of "an evolutionary dead end" or "a unique but successful adaptation to its environment." I'd go with the latter.

Being a Platypus is good as Dirck Halstead is ways pointing out at Digital Journalist.

I have tried the M8 and my R-D1 side by side in the Dallas Lecia class and decided to stay with the R-D1 for my digital rangefiner for the next few years. It and the amazing CV lenses will do the jobs I want to do...
