This is very true in my experience, though I would expand it to include nerdy younger guys. 90% of the time that somebody hits on my camera, it's a dude. Women are much more likely to hit on a Polaroid, TLR, or Holga.

All I ever attracted with my Leica were icky old guys.

It's not the camera, it's the lenses. I'm sure your wife's aspersion on the subject of you coolness stem from a deep resentment toward the thousand plus dollar optical jewels that adorn the camera when her ears, neck and fingers would like some jewels of their own!
