The constellation of people in third picture is better for my eye, but that pillar or what it is makes it too "crowded", therefore I voted for No1.
Please help me pick the best image...

This is so true...not knowing how you show your anger makes it harder for me to interpret this photo...
Now, here in the states we set cars and businesses on fire...and not in protest only...we do this when our local sports team wins a championship...this is not a joke, it really happens...:bang:

By the way I like that Learning to fly quote... That record and the last one are so amazing... The band is wonderful without RW too...
I agree with you there's something with version1 that is not in the others, and maybe even without being able to describe things, it leaves an open door to imagination, and the whole image is clean, and the instant is clear...
I wasn't really expecting some people to prefer version2 or version3 as I sometimes do, but they got me now as confused as when I saw them all for the first time... I thought everybody was going to prefer version1...

Very good point... Indeed when I saw the ad and made the last versions, I was thinking drinking is a big part on disturbs and fire... I guess your point is valid, and as a previous member said, version1 works better because it shows anyone's tranquility can be surprised anytime by unexpected situations... Maybe I should just forget the crisis narrative thing, and just respect the best composition and the best instant...

After not looking at the images for some hours, I just took a look at them and found version3 the best one. I agree with you totally: version1 is confusing. No way to understand... Version3 may not be a beauty, but talks about us as a society in a more complete way: there's a story there... I'll look at them once again in a few days and decide, but I think version3 will finally be the printed one... It was also the only one that satisfied me while shooting... I stopped shooting the scene after that shot...

Number 3 conveys something to me that the other two don't for some reason ... and I don't read Spanish! 😀

By the way, it's the first time I use 3200 under harsh sunlight at f/2... It was fun, and required 1/2000, yellow (B+W) and ND8 (Nikon) filters... One of those things poor little SLRs just can't do...😀

I find the version 1 to have the best composition, but version 3 is the best in narrating what is happening there and also there's somehow an amusing contradiction between the trash container and the ad. In the end, I voted version 3...

As journalism and social commentary, #1 or #3, but it depends on what your point of view is of the story. Essentially, you have to ask whether your message is that public doesn't really care, in which case #1 works best. If your take on the story is that people are engaged, then #3 works better.
As photographs and not news, I like them all.
I'm neither a photojournalist, nor editor, nor a critic. However, I think that the photograph that works best aesthetically is not always the one that works best narratively or journalistically.
Ultimately, you have to ask yourself which one of these frames best tells your version of the events. It may not be the image you think is prettiest or even most accurate.
I think you need people in the frame. Which people is something you'll have to decide.

As someone who regularly has what they consider their best shots of a situation 'binned' by a picture editor in favour of an image that they believe tells a fuller/better story, this quote sums up my feelings on the images you've posted. For me image 1 is my preferred image as the elements are linked and it appears to flow more. However in all honesty I wonder if there's a better image within the scene that has not been realised. Of course a 90mm as your only lens at the time won't have helped to allow you to visually explore the full scene.
Editors (and readers) may prefer flames and protesters but it is perfectly possible to sum up a scene or situation in a similar manner to that which you have tried here, it just seems in my experience to take alot more experimentation than the more obvious 'news' shots.
By the way, the picture editors are nearly always right - at least in regard to the choices they make from my submitted images.
We've never really 'talked' on RFF before but I've read many of you're clearly considered and thoughtful posts and enjoy them, it seems clear to me that you have the ability to see a different way of showing such events as these and that it is worth you pursuing this approach further.
