does the durst m301 have a negative carrier???? my dad gave me his set up and i'm not seeing one..
naturally it's been 30 yrs so my dad doesn't remember

A negative carrier will be hinged in the back, the top and bottom leaves each have a window that frames the negative image, its dimensions (width,depth, and thickness) need to fit in the space of the enlarger.

I have a Durst M302. It has a neg carrier but it's not like the removable type like on my Bogen that is henged & folds over to hold the neg in place. It's more like a square metal piece that's held in place by clips. There is a handle that raises & lowers the platform that holds the negetive in place. The M302 I have is 35mm only. I doubt it is much different from the M301 but I don't know.

The M-301, like its predecessors the RS-35 and M-300, doesn't use a conventional "negative carrier". The function of a negative carrier is performed by three different components. The bottom of the condensor housing serves the duties of what would be the upper half of a conventional sandwich style negative carrier. The lower half's duties are performed by a dark gray "sleeve" type of fixture (I forget the Durst nomenclature) that slides in from the front and covers the front and part of the sides of the lower "jaw" of the main casting. The "sleeve" holds and insert that serves as the mask and film guide rails. There were several inserts made for the M301, the common ones being the default 35mm FF, a 35mm half frame, a 126, and a 16mm sub-minature (for Minolta-16, et al).
When everything is present, you lift the condenser housing using the red handle on the front and slip the film strip in from either the side or front. If you are dealing with single negatives, you can slip the "sleeve" out and put the neg onto the insert. Some insert have clips that can be used to hold single negs.

Do you think I could tape the neg onto anti Newtonian glass... It fits under the upper manifold and is held in place by the upper groove???
