Please Sign This Petition to Adobe Regarding DUST and SCRATCHES on Scans

I haven't used it, but I hear SRDx for Photoshop does a great job and does black and white. If Adobe can get this built into lightroom that'd be great! Since it's Adobe's product they will probably be able to make it better than SRDx which would be awesome.

Unfortunately, what the author of the petition is requesting can't be done. Digital ICE in a scanner uses two scans of the negative. One scan uses visible light to capture both the dye colors of color negatives or positives, and physical defects of the negative like dust or scratches. The other scan uses infrared light to capture the same physical defects but it can't "see" the dye colors. It's a simple job for the scanner software to subtract one digital file from another. In this case, (color + defects) minus (only defects) equals (color without defects).

Digital ICE doesn't work with silver gelatin black and white negatives because physical silver particles in the film are indistinguishable from physical defects on the film. It works fine with C41 black and white films like XP2.

Digital ICE won't work with the high end scanners the author mentions or with digital camera scans because there is no separate infrared scan.
