Plustek 7400 vs. 7600i SE

Hello everyone...

I'm thinking about getting a scanner with my Christmas bonus, and through tomorrow, B&H have the 7400 at $218 and the 7600i SE at $290. As far as I can tell, these two are similar except the 7400 does not have the infrared channel used for dust/scratch elimination. is this basically correct, or are there other differences I'm not aware of?

As far as the IR dust/scratch removal goes, it's only for color and chromogenic B&W and doesn't work on standard B&W negatives, correct?

Is there any reason to get the 7600i SE over the 7400 if scanning only B&W?

How well does the IR dust/scratch removal work on the 7600i SE?

Thanks to all - and great forum BTW...I think my first post here...I'm trying to get back into film after a long hiatus - common, eh? I did a lot of B&W darkroom work back in the 70s, mostly color commercially processed in the 80s and 90s and digital in the 00s...and am now looking at trying a hybrid workflow.

I'm happy with the 7300, if that helps (I guess it's a little worse than the 7400?). So far, I've only scanned B&W (lots of stocks) with it.

I'm going to by a Pluste 7600i SE from B&H on Sunday. This will be my first scanner and can't wait to start using it with my film. I perfect the dedicated scanners vs a flatbed. From the results I've seen, this scanner seems to be great.

Well, I ordered the 7400, but am out of town for a few days for the holidays, so it will be a while before I get to try it out.

B&H shows 7600 is out of stock, while I saw one on newegg for the same price.

I checked with B&H on about the 21st when they showed the price expiring on the 23rd and the 7600i SE being out of stock, and they said just call and purchase over the phone rather than online, and that would lock in the lower price. Then, on the 23rd, they were back in stock. I don't have any experience with newegg, but have used B&H for a lot of purchases over the years.

They have them at Adorama for the same price too. And it seems to be that price all the time.

Hey dobro, I didn't get it yet. I'm actually tied between the 7400 and 7600 SE as well. Not sure which one to get just yet. Have you tested yours out yet?

No, not yet.. I still haven't picked it up at the post office yet..we were out of town for the holidays and just getting back. Hopefully I'll have time to.try it out early this week.

Got the 7600I SE today at Adorama, I'll post samples once I figure out how to use it.

I'm also debating between 7400 and 7600. I only shoot standard BW so IR dust detection would be totally useless to me. I wonder if there are other significant differences in hardware, or if I'm missing something - and if anyone has any experience on either of the two scanners for standard BW. Also, I use Vuescan on a Mac.

was searching google for info on the 7400 vs 7600, and this thread popped up!

from what i've read, its basically the ir dust removal which is featured on the 7600, but not he 7400.

right now, the 7400 is advertised on b&h for $30 off...and with that discount, it costs $249.

The 'sale price' ends on November 23rd, but does anybody here think that the price would be even lower in December? I don't mind holding off, especially if it might go lower than $218 which was last year.
