I just have a cheap knife from Target, I want a nicer one but much more fancy and people might not believe it's just for opening packages.. Plus since that's all I actually use it for, not a whole lot of point spending money on that instead of a lens or something.

guys guys guys... i just spent 7 and a half hours in a printing warehouse. You dont NEED a knife!! At the state of my hands and forearms, all you need is a fresh piece of corrogated cardboard - it literally RIPS through skin!

I feel ya! I am a printing press operator by trade and have had my fair share of paper cuts. That being said, I also have to have a sharp strong knife handy for all kinds of daily tasks including cutting open the plastic coverings, and straps while opening skids of paper.
A good knife for me is a tool that I need in my daily life for many tasks which do not include killing babies, or stabbing people. However, if the situation does arise, it can and will be used for self defense.
I have many knives that I rotate on a daily basis depending on locations or activities planned. Mostly pocket folder models such as Spyderco, or Kershaw. Right now as I type this I have a orange Kershaw Zing clipped to my pocket, and that will be my utility knife for the work day.

The only knife I'll ever need. It was gift from wife shortly after we met. Which means I've carried it every day for fifteen years and it's performed without a hitch.

I have a variety of nice pocket knifes. A co-worker once asked me why I have a pocket knife, and that came as a complete surprise. Since my dad gave me my first knife in the 50's (duller than a butter knife- but), I've always had a knife in my pocket. I can anyone go without a knife.

I could go on and on, but why doesn't everyone carry the greatest tool ever invented?

My main carries include these.

German: a little Boker cattleman--nice Barnack companion
French: Opinel #6 (as I write); fancy Laguiole
Swedish: Emil Olsson/Eskilstuna penknife--gold worn off the engraved steel scales
Japanese: don't know the brand; hinged like an Opinel, but thicker carbon steel with a tanto edge.

Speaking analogously: long live carbon steel, the RF of the blade world.

An Old Sabre Pocket Knife that has seen far better days. Bought it at a reenactment for $5 bucks.

A bit of oil, some steel wool to remove surface rust and a nice stone sharpen made it work wonders!

Check out the sypderco h-1 pacific salt models. They use 1% nitrogen for hardness (57-58rc) from the Myodo foundry in Japan.

You need to remember to set the safety catch, because it can be quite interesting if it suddenly opens in your pocket... That's for formal wear (certain dinners, for example).

For every day, a Leatherman Wave and Swiss Army Champ, in holsters. Pliers, can-opener, screwdrivers (probably the most used), toothpick, nail cleaner, corkscrew, tweezers, ballpoint, scissors (how else do you trim film when you haven't an ABLON with you), reamer, saw... Without either, I find myself reaching for then several times a day, and noticing their absence.

I carry a Leatherman Wave at work or when tinkering around at home. I use the pliers in it most often, a few times a day usually. It's too big and heavy as a pocket tool for me, so I holster it on a belt. I don't take it when it would be obvious or inappropriate. Going to a movie, for example. I also carry a single blade pocket knife, not excessively large. I have a few I use in a loose rotation, mostly Bucks. To actually cut something (like for opening a package) that's usually what I reach for. I feel really lacking when I don't have it (such as when flying).

As far as pocket knives go I've got some piece of junk switchblade that I could care less about if it snapped prying at something, and a Benchmade 530(so light and thin). I'm not sure why I like knives so much but I've got to restrain myself and not buy them otherwise I'll become a knife whore as opposed to a camera gear whore.
