Point & shoots comparable to the Ricoh GR1?

I think I'm sold on the Tiara! How many versions of the Tiara were released though? I see the Tiara II and Tiara Zoom....is there supposed to be a Tiara I somewhere?

I have owned a lot of small P&S with 28mm lenses. Other then the ones previously mentioned, the XA4 is nice, plus it has a macro. Contax TVS is beautiful. If you go digital, the GRD series is phenomenal. I'd also look at the original Panasonic LX1. Faster than any of the LX series. Virtually no shutter lag. I have owned the the LX 2 and LX3 and their shutter lag is horrible.

Some (most?) of the little cameras have a time delay even if you pre-focus. I had a Leica film p+s for a week and even if I pre-focused the lens did not go to the focus position until the final press of the shutter button.

Does anyone know if the Fujifilm Klasse W and S have such a delay?

Minolta TC-1 all they way. I have a GR-1s, an though it is a nice camera, it's always in my drawer while my TC-1 is always in my bag.

It's just such a little jewel - I have never felt any p+s which comes close to the build-quality. You can really tell it was a labour of love by the engineers. And the fact that it shoots insanely beautiful photos is just a plus...

I'd totally buy the TC-1 if I didn't just pre-order the 5D Mk III. It actually sounds better than the GR1 to me now. In fact, B&H just had a used TC-1 listed in excellent shape w/ box for around $550 I believe. It's gone now though. 🙁

I think I'm going to get that Tiara though. Does anyone know what the differences between the Tiara I and Tiara II are? I've searched all over but can't find any info on it.

I've never so far seen such designation, Tiara I and II. Searched a bit...this explains difference - just where strap is connected to body.

I'm happy with DL Super Mini Zoom aka Tiara Zoom (some pictures). Mine is bent and dented so it's to stay with me. Everything is great about it, just metal body isn't too nice at winter. And Mju II Zoom 80 has useful little rest for finger on sliding door, but Fuji's design do not allow it.

I don't do much with the "premium" point and shoot cameras. The extent of my experience is the Pentax UC-1 (which has a very laggy AF and a meter that tends towards overexposure) and an Olympus XA. The XA is not a point and shoot (it's a rangefinder) but for a pocketable 35mm camera it's damn near perfect!

Thanks a lot for posting that, the most useful info I've seen so far on the Tiara I vs. Tiara II differences. There has to be more than just a cosmetic difference between though, right? Doesn't make sense that Fuji would release an new version of a camera with such a minor tweak. 😕


I'm starting to see your point though, unix. The more I read about cameras like the Stylus Epic and XA2, the better they look to me. Maybe I'll just get that Tiara I forget about the T4 & GR1.

I suppose that when you say T4 you mean Yashica T4. I had both of these and the little Fuji is clearly a winner for me. The T4 was at times inconsistent with focusing and in general the Fuji produces more detailed pictures - or at least to my eyes. The Olympus Xa2 left me completely cold and unimpressed, loads of vignetting. The Epic and the Stylus infinity are good cameras. The only P&S that I ever owned that reminded me of the GR camera's is the Nikon AF600. Small, slim, easy to use and great ergonomics. Wish I'd kept mine :bang:

I'd consider getting a GR10 but the used prices don't seem much different than the GR1's. If I could find one for under $100 though, I'd definitely snatch it up.

I use Tiara only in AF- haven't used the manual mode so far.

Yes, basically that are the differences.
Also it's made from sheet metal, instead of the magnesium alloy.

The "Snap" mode is different too, as you can lock the focus at any distance.

The Ricoh R1 has a 30mm lens; the lcd is a weak point of this camera.
I use the Konica Off Road with a 28mm/4 lens or the Nikon AF 600, both not as cult-ish as the GR series, but with great output.

Ricoh is off my shopping list forever. In addition to my GR1v (previous post) I bought my daughter a Ricoh R1 and it didn't last very long before it packed it in. That was in the days before we got used to dropping cameras in the rubbish bin.
