Why anyone spends the extra money for a circular polarizer for a manual focus camera is beyond me! A plain old garden variety linear polarizer will work just as well.
The BIG problem, however, is predicting the results you'll get with either of the types. This is one of the few advantages an SLR camera has over a rangefinder...you can see the polarizing effect immediately as you compose.
It's sort of hit-or-miss, but one method I've used (with limited success) is to watch the in-camera meter as I turn the filter. I've had moderately good results by assuming the lowest light level (shown on the meter) is maximum polarization.
If you can think of a better way, please post it.
