No, but I have seen it before in a Time-Life photo book of the 80s. If memory serves me right, this photo was taken during a judicial proceeding against these both police men.

I don't know the photographer or exact year (might be 1964), but this may help getting down the road to finding out. You may remember the movie 'Mississippi Burning' about the slaying of two white civil rights workers and their black companion. I am almost positive this photo is from the trial of these policemen for the race killings with which they helped. I may be wrong, but I remember seeing this photo and reading the story behind it was directly tied to the Mississippi killings. Hope this helps...

That's absolutely right -- this was part of the FBI MIBURN trial. The men in the photo were Deputy Sheriff Price and Sheriff Rainey of Neshoba County, Mississippi at hearing in 1964 after arraignment. It actually became a federal case (violation of civil rights by murder) because the state of Mississippi refused to prosecute the men for murder (under the state's jurisdiction). AFAIK, this case was actually one of the drivers for LBJ to sign into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

i think you're correct in the time period, 1965. were these the klansmen, some of who might have finally been convicted a couple years ago? i have a vague memory of the image in the mass media and i remember this poster from campuses back then, but have never come across a credit for the image. i can't remember if it (the poster) was put out by sncc or sds...or just some campus group.
