Political issues

endustry, you made a good point when you say that a self-attrtibuted freedom of speech is totalitarianism upside-down. While we can say what we want when we want it, we also must keep in mind that our rights end where others' begin.

There have been several threads about politics in this forum, Olsen; if you look for them, you'll find them, but like Kully said, reading them had a strange effect on the opinion I had of some members. I learned, however, that we can overcome our differences and look for what binds us (photography and cameras) instead. In any event, the discussions were always very even, reasoned, cool and relatively calm, even though most of us were, say, against the beliefs of the then owner of this forum. Sure, you can start one, but keep in mind that this isn't your house but a privately owned forum and we're guests.

At least that's how I see it.

Besides, I come here to escape those discussions. Call me what you like, but this is a safe haven to me. Let's keep it that way.

So the basketball threads should also be banned in your opinion and people go to a basketball forum if they want to talk about it?

Seriously, look at the threads : people talk about happy birthday, where is Ruben, basketball, etc .... but anytime you mention economics or politics all the members that are not interested invade the thread in a moralizing wording. I don't go on the Celtics thread saying that this is a photography only forum. I enjoy that people talk about other interests they might have. As Olsen said, I feel the level of discussion on this forum is pretty good, but when it comes politics/economics, people become suddenly .... about it.

Very true.

Here's an observation, for what it's worth. It looks to me as though those who don't have a problem with politics in the forum are mostly on the left, while those who want all discussion of politics banned are mostly on the right.

Does anyone else have the same impression? It's a wild generalization, of course, but it's the impression I've gained.

We can move this thread to the Off-topic forum, which seems to me more adequate.

BTW, Roger, I think you're right. Never paid attention to it, but I guess you're onto something...

You are probably right. Reality is that with the current failure of ultra-liberalism, the voices for a more balanced world are raising all over the planet. (damn, I am talking politics ... sorry)
I also would say that Europeans seem in general more open to politics talk than our friends from across the ocean. Bipartism is probably the reason for it.

Well, I did say 'mostly'. And you have to allow that Mao was not exactly an advocate of free speech. Go far enough right or left, and the regimes are indistinguishable. I was tallking more about political parties with an interest in democracy.

I see no problems talking politics here - after all it is and will impacts what camera/lenses we can buy, where and how we can shoot, etc. As said above - dont want to talk about it - dont read it. I think since this forum is very international it's interesting to see how politics and economy impacts people around the world. Plus its rather boring to keep reading "what came in a mail" or " Leica porn" threads all the time. People talk about politics and economy because it affects them. Nothing is wrong with that as long as thread is civil and doesnt offend anyone. I, for one, would like to know what people from other countries think about US presidential candidates. This can also affect our travel plans as well - many threads on what gear to take where - yet politics can affect some travel limitations, possible issues. It's good to share opinions on all this.
Keep it civil and respectful and I see no problems. After all we DO have an "OFF Topic" section. If we cant talk about economy or politics there, what is it for than?

We have "Off Topic" section, so why not use it for everything, poitics included? Or "off topic" means something else to you? If so - what, exactly?🙄

I live in Southern California, less than a two-hour drive to the Mexican border, so yes, I am an expert on Latin America.

The above makes as much sense as perpetuating this thread on RFF.

You forgot the World Cup Soccor thread too.

There are a couple points which are missed in your arguments.

First, though we are a narrowly focused forum to discuss a niche within photography, we are also a community. You also assume that all conversations are curbed, which is far from true. There are a number of off topic discussions, economic included, which boarder on political which have gone on without issue at RFF (Olsen has started many of them). Those conversations have been educational and the exact sharing which has been expressed as desired in this thread. They helped build our community just as that Celtic Pride thread did for that group of our members. There is a difference though in those threads to those which are intended or turn to the point that they are disruptive to our community. Those threads are and will be treated differently, but in no way is the truth that all threads like this are closed or deleted. Again, that simply is not true.

Balance is called for in moderation; try to eliminate politics entirely and you'll suck the life out of a forum. Visit the bones of the Leica forum on photo.net for proof of that.

I come here precisely because it's a community of sorts. I'm always interested to hear what people across the globe have to say, even if the topics do tend to wander. Actually, one of the first things I look for when reading what a new member has written is their location in their avatar. And, I have to say, I simply don't trust people who have no location listed. 😀
