Was it a good idea to have Bob Shell thread closed? Seems that people split on that one as well. So, how about we look at what majority thinks?
Yes or No?
Yes or No?

Glad I read this before posting something "really nasty..."BillP said:I have voted. Can I suggest that we JUST VOTE and NOT debate on this thread? It serves a useful purpose.

What you need to do is find out how to start a poll...

this thread is rude.
talk about trying to shove a view down people's throats.
how many threads will there be so that people can continue to make a point?

You think it is rude to have a poll about something people talk about already with 100 or so posts? WOW!!!!
Well, than again - you can close this one too, as rude was the reason original thread about Mr Shell was closed, right?

I'm not sure I see your logic here - it's a poll - if more people vote Yes - it was a good idea, and you were right, but in most vote No - well, you were not.
What view you are talking about here?

RFF is not a democracy. Deal with it.
A couple of years ago when Jorge was still at the helm, he institued changes to the forum structure with regards to classified ads which were very unpopular with many folks including myself. If I remember correctly Jorge told me/us not to bother having a poll about his decision because it was his to make.
Some good folks left RFF over that issue, but that's simply the way it is. A poll is not going to serve any useful purpose. Even if the result shows that the majority of members disagree with Stephen's decision to close the thread, like I said, RFF is not a democracy. Deal with it. This is not like fighting dictatorship in a country. This is just an internet photo site. Stephen Gandy's site, his rules, his standards. Simple.

Were I running this business, I'd be glad to take a look at what people think about how I'm doing on some of the important decisions.
My feeling is that this poll is not rude. But I won't start a poll to see how others feel about it.

What's happened is that rather than letting it peter out of its own accord, the thread got quashed and folks have mounted a sort of civil disobedience thing in response. Rather remarkable, if you stop and think about it. And speaking of which, let's take a deep breath and move on.

Although Frank put it somewhat bluntly, I think a poll about our Bartender stand will force his hand. Do we want it ? Are we going to get back a more generous attitude by him to us ?
Is this issue of the American Justice (in general or just in the South) so crucial to go towards such a confrontation with RFF owner ? Quite long ago the thread stopped to deal with Bob Shell.
The discussion was heated, no doubt. Was it abusive? In case you think his decision to close the thread was mistaken, send him a very polite PM. I have had several exchanges of PMs on other issues and I can vouch Stephen is not a low profile personality at all.
I do advise on behalf of all of us, to make the most of RFF, work with Stephen, help him, guarantee him a margin of good faith even in disagreement. He deserves it, not just because being the owner, but by himself, his culture, his true involvement with Photography, and his capacity to kindly deal with people.
Stephen has been extremely kind with me, when a thread i opened he asked me to cancel. He wrote me in such good manners and open heart, that regardless of justice I couldn't but comply. He was extremely polite with me, although I have never bought anything from him. Being this the case, the mention of bussiness in the actual case now, sounds to me somewhat childish.
It is very easy to destroy, just inertia of daily life. It is very hard to build, the way is never cleared. I do symphatize with all folks feeling frustration when amidst a heated debate thread or post is closed. I think I have some medals here. But lets have a coffee and take real proportions of the whole issue.
Cheers to all,
Ruben

If I were Gandy, I'd shut down the RFF site for a week, just to give people time to cool their jets and get a perspective on things.

I agree. Were I a mod I would find this offensive. As a member of the RFF community, I find it pointless.

Now THAT would be rude...and spiteful...and a poor marketing move.
I never question the authority of the guy who owns this place (or any other I visit), but I'd consider a stunt like that to be reason enough to find another home.
Not that it would happen.

The mods tried that on an obscure musicians' forum last year. Actually it was a subforum.
When it was reopened the members came back and fought with a vengeance.
I guess you would expect that in a subforum called..... "Religion and Politics".
They had to shut R&P down for good. The regulars left the board for good.
Apparently the mundane discussions of music bored them.
