Until yesterday I had never heard of Bob Shell. Seeing what's taken place the last couple of days makes me wish that had continued.... A lot of energy is being used on something that will fade away for most of us soon enough. So it goes...

I wish somebody would close this thread. And that's not a good thing. :(

I hate it when it happens, but in this case I voted with a Yes , it was o.k. to close the Bob Shell thread, for the reasons Daniel Ridings mentioned.

A bunch of assumptions and cliches discussed as facts , no real knowledge of what the facts really were, all plain speculation. Some of the few sane guys were rolled over.

And this thread here isn't better and I think closing it would not be a loss either.

Is it only my personal perception or does it really get almost impossible to keep a discussion straight along the facts at RFF, longer than let us say six to 8 posts, at least if it is not about any lenses or cameras of photo bags ?

Careless reading others contributions, assumptions, insinuations, projections, the know all manner, a basically hostile attitude against each other, arrogance, thoughtless choice of words, off topic teenage phone chat, the permanent attempt of some bored simple minds to bend a discussion off topic and so off rail, this is what happens permanently and it will ruin the culture of discussion here.

Getting involved in such threads I often find myself discussing on this level of idocy too soon and I think others also know that feeling of waking up suddenly and thinking "WTF am I doing here ? "

As fo me, I am not willing to let me draw in ever again.

As for the moderation: Maybe it would be helpful sometimes to intervene a bit earlier to keep the lane, this could avoid the necessity to close thread later, which always leaves a bitter taste in our mouths.

I'm offended by the over-use of the word "rude" on this forum.

And I find it rude that so many of you are getting offended by others' not trying to be rude.

Hi Steve,
It happens that several people at RFF know or knew Bob, hence part of the interest.

In my case I came to RFF from the Russian Camera User forum, where Bob was central figure there. I didn't developed any special relations with him. But I can understand there are a lot of people around who knew him much more.

Cheers,
Ruben

Hi Ruben,

Yes, I saw Raid's comment yesterday about knowing Bob Shell, and gathered many others knew him as well. I didn't mean to infer that he was a nobody; rather, not knowing who he is was probably more of an indictment on me.

That said, the man has gone/is going through some rough stuff right now. I don't know what all the pounding on the keyboards by those of us in the free world is supposed to accomplish however, especially when it turns so nasty and contentious. That is more what I was trying to express.

Yes, as the owners stated reason was valid. Nothing productive was going to come out of it any longer.

Indeed it was right, IMO. Strong opinions were voiced. Those aimed at Bob and his trial were fine, but those aimed at respective judicial systems were not. Europeans slandering the US system, Americans slandering the European systems. Both claiming to be better than the other (IMO the system in Holland beats any of the others :p ).

Maybe Mr. Shell can fix our cameras while he's in the "big house"--better for him than making liscense plates and better for us 'cause we can get a whopping discount. Now throw stones at me for kicking someone who's already down.

c'mon bertram plead guilty and then the argueing will be over finally
pleeeease

PS: i wanna be a not-really-actually-stripper and tease. Not-really-actually-strippers and teases seem to have lot sof time to waste. :)

I alway wonder why a lot of people seems unable to argue about some controversial stuff without starting to throw insults at each other (I am as guilty as many others on that account).

It was a shame the thread was closed, at least for me, because I learned a few intersting things about the American judicial system (I did not know for example that you can choose not to be tried by a jury, so the whole debate of jury vs judges falls apart).

Unfortunately people started to be insulting so I think the closure of the thread became unaviodable.

Maybe next time a controversial thread is created people will remember this one and start to treat each other with more respect.

what is next ? we start ranking mods on these polls ? this is ridiculous...

That's right Pherd....I came back for some adult conversation and this is what I get.
Really, the guy was found guilty by a jury who was obviously privy to far more info than anyone here. Defending this guy is like saying there's no way OJ did it because he gained 2000 yards rushing.
As for the mods, reading this tripe it seems as if they've been too lenient lately.

PS: Oh yeah, don't drug your models.

US$0.02:

When moderators start showing contempt for regular ole users, it's time to head for the exits. That's what happened to the nearly dead Leica forum over at photo.net. I for one deleted my account there after one too many capricious decisions by Tony Rowlett--and I wasn't the one directly affected.

Well now Mr endustry.....that is simply TOO much and over the line!

I'm collecting my toys & I'm taking them home!

Alex, the only person of influence/relevance that you need to address on this issue is Stephen Gandy, and that is done most efficiently by PM. Remy, myself and others are simply voicing our support for his decision. If you don't like his decision, talk to him.
