just a friendly reminder that VII and Magnums submission deadlines are on the horizon!

VII deadline is Friday!

Magnum is the 15th!

anyone know the deal on Black Star submissions? who, where and when?

a dream for every one of us but you don't know unless you try mon ami!

I'm with you there.

There's also the Hearst at the end of the month. I think the age limit might shave a mighty slice off the public of this forum, but some might want to try it anyway.

It's free. Enjoy it. Nothing to lose.

Don't wish to appear dim but what's the story? Is this portfolio submissions to join or for some form of critique?

If it's a opportunity that could end in being involved with either agency it would indeed be a dream opportunity, unfortunately I have no cohesion in much of my personal images...that's without commenting on the quality!

Maybe after I develop the rest of my film backlog (100 rolls), I will have one or maybe two images worth submitting... not exactly portfolio stuff
Oh well...

I think there are many talented photographers here. Many of which could make a living from it. Whether or not the agencies are looking for the sort of work exhibited by these photographers is another matter, but there are other roads that lead to Rome. I'm with Joe, I know I'm a hack. But I also know the most limiting factor to one's own success is one's own lack of self belief.

I am hitting a handful of competitions this year. I finally think I am ready, but fully expect not to win anything. As Ezzie said, you can't be sure what the judges are after any given year and looking back over past winners it is clear that some competitions/agencies try to mix things up for the sake of diversity, which is understandable.

You have to give it a shot if you think you might have a chance. You just never know, although mentally I will be forgetting about them as soon as the submission has been made.

The most exciting thing about these competitions is not the competition, it is the process of preparation. For the first time in ten years I feel I have defined my photographic groove. Despite shooting landscapes and feeling close, it took a shift towards documentary work to finally click. That might sound odd, but put the landscapes and the docu work together and you would likely see the parallel.

Working towards structured goals has improved my work no end, improved my editing, my ability to articulate what my work is about and if anything has made me more passionate than the already uber obsessed state I was in. Even if I win nothing, that wont change. It has been truly good for me and the future will hopefully bring more exciting projects and personal development.

Thats the thing...what the agencies are looking for. I'm not a photojournalist so my portfolios would not make it, though my projects form cohesive bodies of work and some of them are stand-alone stories. There are, I agree, several extremely talented artists here on RFF but only a couple whose work would be suitable. Damaso is one I can think of immediately, but he is already a professional photojournalist working at that level.

i am glad you are in the muster my friend as i have seen what you are capable of and you certainly have the goods!

these competitions and portfolio submissions are indeed very important as they teach you the process of preparation and putting the work "out there". this week i have been a ruthless editor, a pr agent, a motivational coach and a photographer all in one.

win or not, it is also important to remember that important people start to see your work.

thats about my ratio. 100 or so rolls, maybe two or three images. maybe none.

Whats MJR about? I have looked at their website and I still don't feel I know exactly what they do, how they work etc. They seemn to be a collective like Magnum, but obviously smaller and newer.

Do they have a reputation in the industry, are they coveted etc?
