Without seeing her in person, I can't evaluate whether the 50mm is distorting her face. Only the person who took the actual picture can comment on that, I think.

Thanks for everyone's wonderful comments. I finally got back to reading this thread and saw so many more comments so I had to thank you all.
The distortion is very little I think. It is there though, but I hadn't considered it until it was mentioned here. I personally like the blow out, I wouldn't have wanted much more detail in the background. Also, it was so foggy over the inlet here that there was really not much more than white.
I put this on exhibition during a First Friday art walk. I displayed 13 photos, and this one was enlarged to 11X17 and matted and framed in a 16X20. The redness in her face is a bit more noticeable in the enlargement, but I like the natural aspect of it. Makes her look cold (which it was) My sister, though she hates to admit it, likes this shot. There were many compliments during my show so she felt good about it. If only she were an artist or a novelist, then she could use it. 🙂

Cody, I really like this portrait. Well done!
IMO, this is a great use of the 50mm focal length. To me, there is no noticeable distortion. Using a longer focal length would have changed the feeling of the shot. I like the contemplative mood of it, and the high key, shallow DOF, and the expanse of the background blending into the perfectly exposed face draws my gaze directly into her pretty blue eyes. Sometimes highlights should be blown out, as in this case where there is snow and cold.
