I am hearing both the Silvermax and CHS 100 II are excellent films, but there are voices on the net stating that:
- Silvermax is a one off batch, and it will run out soon after which there will be no more
- CHS 100 II curls like crazy
Could you kindly comment on these, given that you seem to have some insider knowledge?
Thanks
Marek

Hi Marek,
official info is that Adox is working on a continued production. Now with their new purchased coating machine it is even easier.
But there is no need for a hurry, because the current batch was very big and is probably lasting another 2-3 years.
I cannot confirm that. Mine does not curl. CHS 100 II has an additional special anti-curling and anti-halation layer, and that works very well.
Cheers, Jan

Ok, I haven't shot any CHS 100 II yet. But you have to consider, there was the "Adox CHS 100" and there's now the "CHS 100 II".
You propably will find many statements about the first "CHS 100" which aren't true for the new version.
The first "CHS 100" was "Efke 100" film with tigther quality control, the "CHS 100 II" is a new film (on a new base) which was formulated to be similar to the "Efke 100" (which was basically 1950s Adox film in the first place) after Efke closed down.
So the CHS 100 was at the beginning an "old Adox" film, then after Adox' demise produced by Efke, and now it's again a (new) Adox film

The only similarity between CHS 100 and CHS 100 II is the spectral sensivity curve.
Fortunately in all other paramters the recent CHS 100 II has nothing to do at all with the first CHS 100:
CHS 100 II is made on current, modern emulsion making and coating equipment, not on the old crappy machines of Fotokemika.
And CHS 100 II
- has two anti-halation layers, making it much sharper
- has one anti-curling layer
- has significantly higher resolution
- has finer grain
- has much better quality control.
CHS 100 II is a much much better film than former CHS 100.

Thanks.
I need a Iso 100 circa film for situations where 400 ISO films are less indicated, and I prefer traditional films from T grain ones. For the moment I've settled on RPX 100, as it is available in both 35mm and 120 versions, it dries flat, and I like this film better than FP4. I'm going to test the Silvermax and CHS 100 II against it to see if there is some evident advantage. It is a pity Silvermax is not produced in 120 size.

Marek,
I did direct comparisons concerning sharpness, resolution and grain with RPX 100, FP4+, Silvermax and CHS 100 II.
Silvermax won by a minimal margin over CHS 100 II in all parameters.
And CHS 100 II surpassed FP4+ and RPX 100 in resolution by 25% (!), and is also sharper (probably because of the two anti-halation layers).
Concerning grain Silvermax has the finest, followed by FP4+ and CHS 100 II, and RPX 100 has a bit coarser grain than all others.
Cheers, Jan

No, with Spur HRX, but the Silvermax developer is similar.
Also an excellent match for Silvermax film and CHS 100 II is the Adox FX-39 developer (its the original Geoffrey Crawley formular). Very sharp, semi-compensating, good speed, sharp but nice grain.
