Post your drum scans (aka the first official Drum Scanners thread)

No error anymore!

That's good news Jack. Now the final hands-on test should be if the encoder is adjustable DIY style? I.e. if I buy a new DC motor and re-use the old encoder and position it approximately where it's last position was (judging from the screw markings), will it function allright?

I hope in case when I adjust it little off (it has an angle-positioning plate) from original position it'll just re-set the zero position of the drum that I can later correct in Monitor Program. But I'm not sure.

But Fernando haven't bothered about zero position as far as I remember?

We took note of everything when we disassembled the motor, but I'm quite sure we did not care about the zero position.
It's been 8 months so I'm not 100% sure. 🙄

Hey, your discussion about ScanMate DIY is absolutely fascinating (and useful)!

What about creating a new thread specifically about SM11000 maintenance/improvement/DIY?

I've finally decided to post here. This is THE post that made me quit film. Take it as the ultimate compliment. The photos I've seen here as simply so extraordinary that I know that I can never achieve this level of perfection (with the equipment I had). You guys are masters in your art. Even with unlimited trys (aka digital) I've never in 10 years come close to this level of perfection.

This is the best thread in RFF. I'm not really sure what else to say. By the time I'm of 'fixed abode' in which it might be reasonable for me to acquire a garage in which to put such stuff, film will likely be even more niche than it currently is!

Isn't this kind of like saying one shouldn't shoot B&W landscape because Ansel already mastered it?

The photographs and scans here are superb, but there is inevitably someone out there past, present or future that will do something "better". Can't let that stop you from getting enjoyment from your own creative work on your preferred medium.

About to be a new member of the PMT club here! I found a deal on an original ScanMate (2000dpi); the sellers don't know anything about it so I can't be sure of it's condition, but they say it was working previously. I've been without a scanner since my UMAX Powerlook 3000 was stolen so this is pretty exciting 🙂 I'll post updates when the ScanView arrives.

Finally getting 4500dpi straight scans on my Scanmate 11000 (unstitched) from a 5x7 negative with a file size of circa 1.9GB using either Tiff RGB or Tiff Lab. I gave up with the MAC G4s and bought a nice HP Laptop with a decent spec running Windows XP and am using a 1460D Adaptec PCMCIA SCSI card. to mate with the scanner. Works better than anything I managed with the MACs. (Anyone need a G4 or G5 MAC?).

Congratulations Ed!! 😉

Yes, your numbers tell you've hit the hard limits: about 21500 pixels width and about 2 GB file size.
Pity you had to purchase another PC (I drive the SM11K with a G4 10.2.8 + Adaptec 2906 with no issues), but great it worked at least!!
Waiting for your scans then!!

Anyone did scan of Ektar 100 (format 120)? Looks to me little soft and unsharp.

How do you focus?
I've found that AF is not much reliable on negatives, so I work like that:

- Mount a appropriate slide alongside the neg (under the same mylar sheet)
- Focus calibration on the slide
- Scan the neg without AF (uses the fixed focus calibrated on the slide)

Fernando

Good idea! Below Ektar 100 high dynamic range capabilities.

Good results on Ektar! The DR of C-41 can't be beat 🙂

My ScanMate arrived yesterday, no chance to test it yet until I find a SCSI terminator though. I though I had one but I can't find it 🙁

Nice results, keep posting! 😉

I wish CQ on Mac would put out 48bit raw scans, but it has a bug and doesn't (3x8 bits even when 3x16 bits selected). 🙁
I have a personal workflow for negative inversion, which needs raw scans.
I'll have to put some efforts into modifying my workflow, to take non-raw scans somehow.

Fernando

You would see banding on raw 8 bit scans after inversion. My neg inverter plugin for Photoshop delivers nice halftones and once you set proper white point you can batch invert your frames.

Vuescan also makes nice ICC profiles for negs - much better than Lprof. Great work Ed Hamrick! But when illuminant changes even a little then you have color cast.

Congratulations Ed!! 😉
