It was at f8--I was just sorting out how the X-100 works and I was pleasantly surprised at the slightly OOF background. I had been shooting a 28mm equivalent lens on an APSC sDSLR.
 
Thanks. I too have lived primarily with a 28mm angle-of-view, for years. And my mind still struggles with worries of not having a wide enough view when I use the X100. But the X100 pictures are so great, I might eventually be able to kick the 28mm habit. 🙂

I really love this portrait. Great look to it. I also don't know who he is, but it's nice nonetheless.

I hate asking this but...I'd love to know what settings you used and what PP you did after the fact to give it that soft, lower contrast look (looks like film).

Don't remember exactly, but most of any kind of post processing I do is done in adobe camera raw. probably lowered the blacks a little and made it less saturated and contrasty, etc. I almost always lower vibrance and saturation down three or four points from my raw files. Less blacks, and less nearly-blown-out whites.

it's a software, VSCO Film, a friend showed it to me the other day, basically it emulates film looks on digital files, I asked about it because of the grain you've added, overall I really like the treatment (also on these party shots, pretty good!).

Haven't tried this software, it's more or less like a Silver Efex for colour. I've never used neither, but I should give'em a try sometime.
 
I have just got my X100 and this was my first shot in my getting to know you walk locally. It seems to be a lovely camera to use and the quality of the images is wonderful.

I'm hoping this is the start of a long and fruitful relationship.
