The rankest smell I have ever inhaled in my entire life

The Salton Sea is split by the county line between Riverside and Imperial counties. Fifty years ago I worked as a detective sergeant in Imperial County. It didn't look like that, or smell like that back then. It was vibrant, but I could see the handwriting on the wall. More saline each year. Soon the fish would begin dying. Sad. I like your photographs,.

Very cool. I watched a documentary years ago called 'Plagues and Pleasures of the Salton Sea' where they went into detail about the creation of the sea, the popularity of it, the downturn, and where it is today. Crazy history there.

I haven't been back in about two years, but it was also sad to see how much has changed in that little amount of time. It's another place where the draught really puts things into perspective. Water levels were extremely low compared to where they were and many of the abandoned items have been torn down or are no longer there.

Vince, love the expression. Did you choose from a menu in-camera or in photoshop or efex-pro?

That is a camera RAW shot, and I just desaturated it in the Fuji RAW converter, then I was very 'piano piano' - as my Italian brethren would say - in Silver Efex.

Thanks, Vince. I'll try that (have yet to shoot in RAW). Tell me exactly what "piano piano" means so I can use it correctly. I have several Italian friends, a few of whom are actually "Italian Italians." The others are from New York City.

'Piano piano' = 'softly softly'. In other words, don't go crazy in Silver Efex. A light touch is all that's needed.

BTW you may want to use some hand gestures when you say 'piano piano', for the full Italian effect :)
