Anyone ever posted from Uk to Indonesia, I have someone very interested in one of my lx with the 40mm fitted, are postal service to Indonesia, reliable and if so are they expensive, any help gratefully appreciated

Whereabouts in Indonesia?

As from a few years back, I have heard from ex pats living in Jakarta that anything of value goes missing in their postal service.

I advise caution.

Being on the receiving side, never had any missing shipment yet other than lens cap from China once, and that's without tracking so probably the seller lied to me.

The common problem is (these are in realm of "public known secret")
- If you're business that import stuffs in large volume, then some of the cargo will be given as "tribute" to the customs officials.
- Bonus item (such as limited edition DVD bonus) can be snatched away and they feign innocence.
- The customs value got hiked up. My used R-D1s is priced more than a used M9. In this case, you have to go to the airport post office to make a claim. I heard this is the most common.
Happens in random, you can get away with normal procedure most of the time.

Customs tax last time I had toy shipment is about 32.5%, including customs, consumption tax, luxury tax and extra import-deterrent tax. Camera should be the same.

If in Jakarta, my acquaintance suggest monitoring the shipment tracker and as soon as it arrived in Jakarta, go to the airport post office the next day and stand as witness in the customs inspection. If you're not present they will have someone from post office standing as witness.

Posted some Canon filters when I was travelling on Sumatra with my motorcycle and to north-side Medan witch is considered rather remote part of the country - everything was fine on receiving them, just took longer time to arrive. I reckon Jakarta is the first place it lands in the country thus probably much quicker and "safer" in comparison.

thank you for the very helpful replies chaps, no offence to the people of Indonesia but I think I will avoid posting the camera there, purely because I could do without the hassle

Also on the receiving side, I have received safely one Rolleicord from the US and one Leica M from Sweden, all within 3 weeks time door to door. Smaller cheaper items like films from Freestyle, Maco, eBay sellers, arrived safely too. US sellers used Priority Mail. Received some lenses from UK using simple Royal Registered Mail with no problem as well. Just make sure you got it insured.

^ like above. Only had problem once, the rest is as standard procedure
The most risky part is the customs inspection. If you're really worried, pick up the package in the airport's post office.

I must admit its not so much, distance and journey it is the custom issues. To be honest my batch of items on ebay at the moment will be my last for a while, after 1189 transactions I am now very fed up with ebay

I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, I bought goods from ebay and sent them via cargo services with no problem at all. Maybe you can coordinate with your buyer for delivery problems.
