So I went to the really big fall fair in Toronto called the Canadian National Exibition, today. I took along my Hexar AF (instead of my Fuji GS645W or Rolleicord) since it was primarily a family outing rather than a photographic one. Here's my question: I did a lot of "shooting from the hip" of people at the fair, and I wonder if I can post any of the pictures I took since I don't have any model releases of the individuals in the photographs?

i don't know the particulars but if the pics are from a public place, if you are not making money from them and if they don't in some way slander the people in them, i'm pretty sure you're ok.

I haven't bought a copy yet, but I heard that the current issue of PhotoLife (Canada) has a full article on rights.
I agree with Joe, if it's in a public place and you're not using the image in a commercial context, you're free to publish without a release.

Surely you can post images from an event like that, I would think. If a newspaper or magazine was covering the event they would post whatever they shot, they don't get model releases and they make money from their publications.

Frank, you could even post the shots in an exhibit of your work. However, if you intend to sell the photo to a stock agency, better get model releases for the subjects, even if they were taken in a public place where they couldn't have any reasonable expectation of privacy.
