POWs, film and cameras?

In 'the great escape' a group of WWII POWs manage to get a 35mm camera. There is no mention of film. They wanted to photograph stolen passes etc..
Now, I understand that bw film can be processed in a variety of things including coffee and urine.
But, can film or a light sensitive material be made using things that may be available in a POW camp?

Most of what they wanted they stole or traded. It's been a long time since I read the book so I can't remember if they stole the Leica they used or traded one of the guards for it.

When they stole things, the guards or whoever were generally too embarrassed to come forward and say anything. In the book it says how they stole a pistol from a Gestapo agent who left his coat laying around. They put it back because they figured it wouldn't go unpunished. The guards also like to trade for the food the POWs got from the Red Cross.

They probably traded for film.
