Looks like I'm going to Prague at the end of the month. Haven't been in about 15 years when I was fresh out of college and not yet a photographer and remember it being a wonderfully beautiful city and very fun and inexpensive. Probably not as inexpensive now for Americans at least but I'm sure everything else still applies.

Just looking for suggestions on things to see and do. Only have a few days and would like to avoid the roving bands of bachelor parties that I hear plague the city these days.

Also bring film or buy there? I usually shoot Tri-X or Neopan 400 but isn't Foma made there now in an old Kodak factory? They have some Tri-X like film correct?

Anything to see, do, eat, drink or shoot is heartily appreciated. Mainly just want to do street photography while my wife is in meetings and enjoy the city.
 
Besides all the usual attractions, I recommend the "bone-church", a few miles outside of Prague. Very strange - you will see.

Great food, great beer (the real "Bud" 🙂 ) nice people.
 
I agree; great people, great beer. And coffee; they're right north of Austria, where they take their coffee very seriously, so something good had to come out of being part of the so-called HRE.

English alert: Be prepared to having to speak the local language! I think I found a handful of people that could speak some English, French or German.

Like the beer and people, it's very refreshing.
 
The film is Foma, it's cheaper to buy in the UK (retrophotographic and freestyle in the US).

Prague is great.
 
Last time I was there I got by with my Let's Go Europe czech phrases and even got around on the bus and subway system drunk out of my mind. Maybe the beer actually helped.

This time will probably be staying in an actual hotel rather than some guys house who was soliciting rooms for rent as I hopped off the train from Paris.
 
You can find all you need at Fotoskoda shop located right in the centre near Venceslav's square: http://www.fotoskoda.cz/intro.asp?lang=en . Across the street is an antique-like shop Pazdera: JAN PAZDERA, FOTO KINO OPTIKA VIDEO, Vodičkova 28,30.

Invite your wife for a dinner here: www.botelmatylda.cz . Request a seat with a view of the Prague castle and river. Recommended start is just before sun set.

In such a beautiful city I would suggest you take at least one 120 camera with you and plenty of film. When you come back home there will be so many pics you would want to blow up then!
 
We were just there last month. Definitely don't miss Fotoskoda, a great camera shop. If you want some nice shots at the Charles Bridge, head over there before the sun rises. You will avoid the crowds of tourists and vendors. If the weather cooperates, you will get some great shots. English was definitely not a problem anywhere, although German can be a great help.

Coffee is terrific at Cafe Ebel. Several locations in town but the best is behind one of big churches off of Old Town Square. Stand in front of the famous clock, face right, and walk around behind the church that you will now face and then hang a right through an arch way. Cafe Ebel will appear on your right as you emerge from the other end. There is also an English language bookstore on the right just past the cafe.

And I rarely had trouble with communicating in English alone.
 
the main train station in prague (hlavni nadrazi) is absolutely beautiful. it's pretty near wenceslas square. there's an old section with ceiling frescoes that is kind of neat. the one in Plzen is also cool, there the frescoes are socialist still! (ie instead of angels you have the farmer and the worker and the intellectual)

karlstejn castle is a short drive or train ride out of town that you can get to via rail for like 6 crowns. it is a beautiful place that was once the treasury of the holy roman empire.

there was a restaraunt franz kafka near old town square that i thought was great food for a very fair price. drink some becherovka for us!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Getting on the plane this afternoon. A brief layover in Belgium. Hope to see it a bit of there too as I've got about 8 hours.
