pre-emptive focus issue

hi, my first post is a question. Recently got a fed 2 I26, I22 and jupiter8, I've shot some on the I26 that came with the camera, but haven't processed them yet. I checked focus/rf accuracy focussing on a distant night time light onto matt tape on the film plane. The I22 seems on the ball but the j8 seems quite off, looks like have to back-focus to get it right, are these discrepancies common, is the solutiuon to shim one lens or adjust the rf for my favourite lens. Looking forward to seeing the differences in lenses and hoping i can use them all on the one body. Previously had rf alignment prob with my oly 35sp so want to get this right from the start and this forum seems the place..john

Hello Jupiter7 and welcome to the forums!

That does sound awful frustrating knowing that all of those lenses are about the same focal lengths, but still some have a few differences.

The I26 is a F2.8/52mm, the I22 is a F3.5/50mm, the Jupiter-8 an F2/50mm. It is quite odd because they are all about the same focal length. Try adjusting something during daytime. Mount on a lens (whichever you prefer to use) and focus on something really distant at infinity, and then do the RF adjustment and see that it's in clear focus. Then try mounting the problematic lens and see how that goes.

I think the first thing to do is finish the film and see if you really have a problem.

You hear stories like this but, with LTM gear, they are more to do with the camerra body than the lens. I understand lenses can be a problem with Kiev stuff. LTM lenses may by incorrectly assembled afetr a dodgey maintenance job but, with 50mm at least, I believe that the focus will be so far out it will be evident without putting the lens on the camera.

HCB never used the rangefinder on his Leica, only the DOF. Use the DOF. May the DOF be with you..... You can always underexpose and push when using B&W, so lack of DOF is rarely a problem.

But wait, I have a Jupiter-9 and I like the shallow DOF of the 85mm at f/2!!! So maybe you should adjust the RF for the 50mm and shim other lens. For those unfortunate Kiev users, we have to shim the camera mount!!

ok, well the lenses only arrived yesterday, so maybe i'm a bit over anxious, test roll should be finished tomorrow and i'm taking alternating same shots with both lenses, so that'll be the proof--guess it should be shoot first ask questions later, cheers
