Scale Model Challenge 2017, Leica M-E, 1938 Uncoated 9cm f/4 Elmar.

I got away pretty unscathed from the Fotografica Beurs;
2 pre-ww2 folding cameras, a Leica lens cap (probably a fake), a couple of film brand pins

It is nice to collect fake Leica lens caps. I have a nickel plated one (probably Russian) and a very old brass one with an eye soldered on it to connect it to the camera; this one may be original, but I've never seen anything like it.

Erik.

Mine appears to be aluminium under the black paint. And the position of the Leica engraving appears off and someone filled it in with white paint.
It is in the style of the early black paint brass caps though.

Best picture I have of it at the moment.

It came to me as marked "Ugly" from KEH. The lens barrel was spinning freely in the focus mount. And both ends were full of cleaning marks.
Clearly someone had attempted a CLA but could not figure out how to get the lens back together properly. Took me a while to figure it out too.
I polished the front and rear surface, that probably took off the coating but got rid of the cleaning marks.

It's still pretty glowwy, but that's hardly unexpected with 10 lens-air surfaces to reflect stray light off of.

Yes, that made me stay away from the Xenon (and from the Summarit 50mm f/1.5 wich is the same lens, but coated; Junku Nishimura makes however great use of it).

This is a beautiful shot, really looks like an original picture from the 1940's.

Erik.

I think their reputation is made worse by that a lot of Xenons and Summarits suffer from haze after 60-70 years.

Protected from stray light and contre-jour these can be quite good. Brian Sweeney recently showed images (over at Leica Place) taken with a very clean sample under indoor conditions.

Thanks, Eric showed it to me on the Vintage Camera Collectors group a few minutes ago.

Another photo taken that day... at 1/10th @ f/2.5 ;)
