Prices in Japan?

Are prices in Japan on things like scanners better than N. America? I have a cousin who is coming home for xmas from Japan and I was thinking of getting her to bring me a Coolscan 5000 or 9000 if the price is right. Am I better of just looking arround the auction site and other online retailers?

I don't know about new, but the Japanese seem to pay way much on the bay for used photo equipment.

The yen seems a little down in relation to the dollar recently so it might be advantageous to buy in Japan at the moment.

The 5000 is 129,900yen and the 9000 is 344,400yen. The price is the same at both.

Chris, FWIW , I took my son to China last year. Manufacturing central for electronics these days. The prices for cameras, scanners, MP3 players, etc etc was just about the same as here in Canada! But you should see the volume of goods going out of the stores. Unbelievable! Never saw anything comparable in NA. Not even Wally world in NA has through put like we saw.

So I'd stay here and grind away on someone who needs a sales quota for December.
