printing a grey card?

I've been wanting to get a grey card for a while now but everytime I look at the price of one of those things I wonder if it's really worth paying that much money for a piece of paper.

I really only need a grey card to use it with my spotmeter when I'm too lazy to take multiple readings. Is it possible for me to print one at home? How can I verify that the result I get is more or less accurate? It doesn't have to be spot on but an accuracy in the range of 1/3 EV would be preferable.

Also, does anyone know what percentage of grey a Pentax digital spotmeter meters? I would assume something in the range of 12%-18%? Should I print an 18% grey area or something like 15%?

I know but I always forget if I'm supposed to open up a stop or close down a stop 😀

It's usually 18%. Printing should be OK if you trust your printer.

Of course, you could just have "Close down a stop" tattooed on your hand 🙂

If you stick on an avery label on the meter that should do, I normally have the battery replace date on all but the selenium meters, and the shutter efficiency compensation on between the lens cameras. It is quicker not to have to think when you are tired.
