hello everybody,

i'm looking now at my grandpa's enlarger. it lived in a box for 30 years. if everything is in place i want to print some of my photos.

any good videos/how-to advice on this? i did it only once at journalism school, but that was a long time ago also.

any recommendations on newbie chemicals, papers...?

There are a lot of lists for this in the forum and on the net here's mine

First check out the enlarger it should have a lens and the light should work when plugged in. Is there a negative carried to hold a film strip
Does the enlarger focus? A dark or semi dark room for testing makes it easier to see

Equipment
Easel
Darkroom timer
Watch or wall clock
Safe light
4 trays
Tongs
Chemicals - liquid concentrate easier to mix- iodide multigradr developer. Kodafix, stop bath. Ilford wash aid (hypo clear)

Paper - resin coated multi-grade
Filters for multigrade VC paper
Large measuring cup/pitcher for mixing chemicals
Something to stir with
Thermometer or wait till chemistry is room temp

I think that's my whole shopping list

Then darken a room and have fun

You may find this, and some other things, on my site to be of interest:

Choosing developing tanks: http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/ps how choose dev tank.html

Loading developing tanks: http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/ps how 35mm tank.html

Processing film: http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/ps how process 35-120.html

I think, too, that Darkroom Basics... and beyond is still in print. It has step-by-steps of just about everything, with lots of pictures of kit: Collins and Brown, ISBN 1-85585-81-2-6, Roger Hicks & Frances Schultz, 2000.

Cheers,

R.

Go to your library and look in the photography section for books (mostly from the 1970s) that clearly explain the process.

A few to look for:
- B&W Photo Lab: Processing and Printing - Julien Busselle
- The Art & Craft of Black and White Photography - George Schaub
- Black and White Photography for 35mm: A Guide to Photography and Darkroom Techniques - Richard Mizdal

Your branch will order books in the system's catalog that are not at your branch.
