Procedure to do Toning

Hi guys, I bought myself a pack of Rollei RSE SELENIA TONER Version II, and interest in the claim that it make the image more resistant to deterioration (using RC paper), am wondering what is the steps to tone, I figure the way to tone is:

0. expose paper
1. dev paper
2. stop bath
3. fixer
4. wash
5. toner (5 minute)
6. wash (10 minute)

Is that correct?

by the way, can I tone paper that was dev years ago? Like soak it in the toner?

and since the toning is done after fixing, I assume its perfectly safe to do the toning in bright day light?

Yes, you can tone prints in daylight or bright artificial light. If you are using RC paper, your time in toner seems a bit long. I use Kodak Selenium toner 1:8 and find a minute is good enough. You may go longer if you are looking for additional change in the print's tone. I use Ilford Warmtone Pearl RC and a minute gives me the split tone I want. The wash time after toning also seems excessive, but that may depend on whether you use a tray or some other wash device - I do mine in the wash tank of a Nova processor and give it a minute as well. Ilford has some good instructions on developing, fixing, and washing RC prints. If you are looking for permanence, you might also consider using Ag Stab [the former Agfa Sistan] after the toning and wash. Hope this helps.

I do my toning on the back deck where there is always a bit of a breeze. Nasty stuff to breath in or get on exposed skin.

If using a selenium toning, you may do a quick rinse after fix and tone.

It will not stain. If you do a sloppy wash, stain guaranteed. Either do the quick rinse or full archival wash, tone, and another full archival wash after either. I learned this decades ago from the late Fred Picker who founded Zone VI. I have prints 30 years old where I did the quick rinse and they are as new.

Put a nice bright light over the tone tray and have a sample untoned and toned print as samples to compare as toning proceeds.

Different papers will get different colors, warm tone will go brown and cold tone can go purple if you tone too long.

Remember you have to circulate the toner across the paper regularly. It's not just leaving it there while you do other stuff for 5 mins.

Also note that there is no set time for toning. One tones according to taste. Once you get the tone you want, you got to pull your print out of the toner. I find selenium turns my prints a little blue. Which I like.

You should use khca wash after selenium bath.

Lastly selenium is poisonous. So be careful with it.
