Project For The Kiev Community

I am thinking about writing a series of systematic postings with photo illustrations, on the Kiev cameras, with several purposes in mind. One of them is to serve the beginner, from the stage he/she evaluates if this cameras are good for him/she, up to the stage she/he with the previous experience of the abovementioned postings, becomes skilled enough to enter the Kiev Survival Site, without "headaches", in cases he choses to. But if not, there are a lot of things that she/he still can do.

Who is a beginner? Certainly he/she is not an idiot. He/she is a person like me that given the proper level explanation can step up and up in the staircase of knowledge. If we want our Kiev cameras to be used more and more, if we want ourselves discover new things about them, if we want more people involved in the FSU forum, then we have to extend to the beginner such a staircase.

Secondly there are here a lot of experiences with the surrounding gear, its use and transformation, that can be gathered.

Thirdly, there is no reason why not gathering picture samples of the quality of Kiev lenses, in a systematic way by lens focal length and type. A past picture thread on the Jupiter-3, was astonishing.

Fourth, many of us have changed the look of our Kievs, with some of us posting pics and I suspect many of us not.

Since the whole project will be done as postings here, we all will have the opportunity to put our diverging opinions on the matters addressed at the corresponding posting I will be writing. I have the suspiction that a lot of knowledge is sleeping and we can awake it via debate, controversy and commentaries.

I think we deserve such a project, the Kiev cameras ceirtanly deserve it, and at the same time we will be teaching newcomers, we will be learning as well.

I myself have a lot of things to say not just to the beginner, but I want to say intelligent things in a way everyone can understand. This is a skill by itself and I am confident to match the challenge.

Ok fellows, what do you think ?

Cheers,
Ruben

Ruben--
What an idea! The community needs you to do this. I visualize a source of regular information about how to get great photos from our Kievs--which are, after all, the greatest of the Soviet rangefinder cameras.

Lead on, Ruben!

Great idea Ruben - from a brand new Kiev- aholic - but please don't wish dee's praxia on any unsuspecting Kiev !!

have received my Kiev 2 and 3 - WOW !!!

I'll volunteer to be your guinea pig not-an-idiot beginner... just playing with my first Kiev and thinking tat my Zorki is going to gather a lot more dust now.

Having said that, there doesn't seem to be much wrong with my new 4a!

This is a great idea. Especially as there are many simple techniques and adjustments that tend to arrive only by experience, like adjusting the meter or fitting a small o-ring to the viewfinder to protect your glasses. If you need info on using a Kiev extensively with flashbulbs let me know!
