I'll be in Providence for a few days this month, and I'm hoping to see some historic sights and make some photos. My first time in New England. Anyone have any ideas for me?

The areas around the Brown University campus are relatively nice. I went there for a conference some years ago, and took my M3 with. It wasn't like full of opportunities, but I did see some spots that were worth a shot. And people too (street vendors).

I'll look for my photos and will try to get back to you. Again, don't get your hopes too high. There are some picturesque areas but... nothing to write home about. Now, if you're a fan of H.P. Lovecraft or O'Henry, you'll find a couple of things related to both of them in Providence: there's a commemorative plaque about the first (I believe in a house he lived in, near Brown), and the surviving home of the latter, while he lived in Providence.

Have a pleasant stay there! :)

Seeing as I was just there in May of this year, I'll pipe in.

You definitely should take a walk on Benefit Street and see the old homes that date from Colonial times. It also passes through the campuses of Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design.

The Roger Williams National Memorial is located very close to Benefit Street. I visited the memorial just before starting my walk on Benefit Street. I learned about the story of Roger Williams, the founder of Providence. The visitor center had a short film, too.
Interesting place to visit. I learned a lot about how Providence got started by visiting the Memorial.

For good eating, if you like Italian restaurants, definitely visit the Federal Hill neighborhood. There are several excellent restaurants in this area, and I ate at two of them. One of them that I highly recommend is Siena. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant.

Those are just a few of the places that I can recommend in Providence, RI.

Enjoy your visit.

Thanks, Ellen. I was hoping someone would chime in with a dining tip! I'll definitely do the walk on Benefit Street. I'm going there to visit my cousin who is very ill, so who knows how much time I'll have. I'll probably stay at the Hampton Inn in the financial district. Thanks for your help!

Federal Hill is a nice area! :) I recall the name and having walked around it back then, when I went to Providence... about 5 years ago. :)
