PS Elements?

On my PC I used PS v7 and was always happy with it. Now that I have a Macbook Pro I downloaded a trial version of PS Elements v6 and this seems to be about what I need for my basic photowork. I value your input as to whether I'm going to miss something with this program or if you would have any suggestions for better or additional software...

PS Elements doesn't have Curves adjustments, and that's so critical for quality work that I find Elements unusable. Its too bad because Elements has everything else a photographer needs without all the graphic design stuff and high price of Photoshop.
 
I am in the same boat, I can't afford PS right now. Is there a plug in for a curves tool? Also, you can only clone stamp in 8 bit. They really know how to stick it to the consumer. As important as curves are, I think it would be easy to work around it with hue saturation, and levels

You are correct that Elements 5.0, which I have used for sometime, does not have "curves". However, Elements 6.0 does have curves, after a fashion. While you cannot move the curve around with your mouse as in the old versions, you can manipulate the curve with sliders. I have been evalulating 6.0 for about 3 weeks, and will probably purchase it.

You might think about Lightroom instead. I have both it and PS CS3, and Lightroom gets a hell of a lot more use for common "developing" tasks. I use PS mostly for the healing brush and localized effects...and the latter is apparently gonna be in Lightroom 2.
 
I have been happily using PS2 for over a year, but gave Elements a try when it came bundled with a new Epson scanner. After a couple of weeks, I un-installed it. I missed not having the curves too, disliked the user interface, and really disliked the way that Elements interacted w/ other photo viewing software. Then again, I have a PC, not a Mac. YMMV.
 
A lot of "bang for the buck" in PSE 6.0. I purchased it bundled with Premier Elements, and the two work together seamlessly. Lightroom might be great if you have only digital camera files to deal with, but for scans you would be crazy not to have some sort of program for retouching.

And that holds equally true for digital files from DSLRs with exchangeable lenses. Even with the modern shakers eventually their sensors will acquire sticking dust!

BTW, what does Premier Elements do? What do you use it for?

You might try the GIMP, Joe. It's free and I use it on both Linux and Windows. It has its limitations, though: only 8 bits, no IPTC data writing...
